The first leg of our ten-day October holiday took place in Paris. I have to admit I was a little nervous about travelling there, as I spoke so little French I had to ask Kate how to say "thank you" and "please" while on the train to get there. I also heard it is horribly expensive, and I was looking so forward to reaching England that I wasn't too terribly interested in anything else.
But we had a great time, the sights were beautiful, and it's just like Italy in that nearly everyone else speaks just enough English for me to get by without knowing much French.
Oreos!! I actually found Oreos, in Venice, and it made me ridiculously happy. Also, this was taken from the top-most bunk in our sleeper car on the train from Venice to Paris.
Travel mates; Kate on the left and Ashley on the right
Along the Champs Elysees
First view of the Tower; we were walking down a street, looking for a specific plaza, and this just snuck up on us
One of the art nouveau Metro stations; I am spastically excited about public transit, as you may have figured out by now. You'll be seeing more examples of this interest.
The Eiffel Tower and another fake dusk
The South African rugby camp
Awesome defacement of a street sign
Underneath the tower
One of my favorite shots
Kate. This was totally un-posed. When she realized that I snuck a shot of her and it came out cool, she asked me to repeat it with her camera. It took two tries because she posed too stiffly the first time.
Our bench underneath the Eiffel Tower; yes, that's the bottle of, "Are you drinking wine from the bottle?"
On the English side of the rugby fans. A massively large screen was set up to watch the game, and the entire park was packed with fans. This shot is the result of my screwing around with my camera's long exposure time in low-light.
The real Moulin Rouge looked absolutely nothing like I expected, i.e., the mental image I got from the movie.
Door handle to the gift shop, i.e., the only part of the Moulin Rouge we could afford to get in to.
Two towers
The infamous Louvre pyramid
More infamy
In the Louvre plaza
“Bound slave”, one of my favorites of Michelangelo’s sculptures
Shadowy figure
There she is; I wish I could have gotten closer, as in within a mere 10 feet.
I can't remember the name of this sculpture from the top of my head, but it draws a crowd
On my way out
La Defense? This was a recently built, entirely modern business sector, with a shopping mall and lots of office space. My 6 friends were all, "Something modern, hooray!" but the design of the space actually made me feel ansty.
Speaking of the other six people I was with in Paris, here they are.
The Arc de Triomphe and the Eiffel Tower
Looking down on Paris
The Sacre Coeur
Cool stairway
Fabric shop
In Montmartre, I think
A transit station!
The façade of Notre Dame
The interior of Notre Dame
The organ of Notre Dame
The tourist of Notre Dame
The red door of Notre Dame
The view of Notre Dame
At the Père-Lachaise, the most famous of Paris' cemetaries.
Grave of Chopin
Beautiful sculpture, and kind of creepy
This cemetery was really neat; does that make me morbid?
Faces come out of the rain...when you’re strange
Speaking of strange...
Some community art center or somesuch which was pretty neat
Street performer!
