From Each Path, Providing

It’s not like Glenn doesn’t appreciate the irony of his situation. No, really. He gets it, okay? Math nerd, science geek, sci-fi fanatic, look, he gets it, okay?

It’s just - no one told him that being all of the above also meant he had to absolutely stick to the guidelines that have long been written in the high school sandbox. They didn’t give out flyers for these kinds of things. Which is probably how Glenn ended up being, well, in this situation.

This situation being hanging out over at the old Popeye’s drive through, the one that had gone out of business years ago and no one went near, with Carol telling them a story about how the drummers in the marching band got high in the attic of the music room and set off the sprinklers while their high school’s fledgling orchestra was trying to practice. Which is how they’re all clustered in the yellowing grass, classes forgotten as the fire department swept the school.

They being the most unlikely group of friends Glenn had never counted on having. They being Rick, the star quarterback of the football team and Shane the lineman, both two of the most popular jocks in school. They also including Lori, Rick’s girlfriend and captain of the cheerleaders and closet Buffy fan. Carol, a senior like Rick and Shane, head of the flute section in both the marching band and regular band and who could make the best pot brownies Glenn had ever tasted. They also including Andrea, the homecoming queen and likely shoe in for prom queen - if Lori doesn’t give her a run for the money that year, who could talk ammo and guns with Daryl until they both ran out of breath.

Then there’s Daryl, the rough redneck from the crowd of kids that got bussed in from the rural county areas, who had backed Glenn up against the stacks in the library one day and demanded that he show him where the goddamn manga section was or he was gonna gut Glenn like a squirrel and eat him. Which had somehow morphed into a two hour discussion of Bleach versus Naruto and how Sasuke just needed to shut the fuck up and get laid already. Which had turned into meeting up several times a week in the library to read manga together, bitch about their favorite series and had, somehow, ended up with Daryl kissing him one day, soft and quiet, pressing them close in the maze of the library stacks, hidden from view.

They weren’t the friends Glenn could explain to his traditional Korean parents, or even the members of the science club who thought Glenn was a calculator or something, just because he was Asian. But Rick, Shane, Lori, Andrea, Carol and Daryl were the best friends he had ever met, who, even though the regular rules of high school normally told them that they were never meant to orbit around each other - they did, and they made it work. And they were happy, hanging out with each other, telling stories from all their different walks of life. It worked and that was all that mattered.

And if Glenn got a boyfriend out of the deal? Bonus.
