32. sugar & spice

“Just what were you doing back there?” Zakariah asked as soon as his pupil came shuffling onto the porch.

Jezebel jumped, but his look of surprise passed over and his usual charming smile came across his face. “Why, just contemplating sugar and spice and everything nice.”

Zakariah frowned, setting his bone china cup back on the saucer. “Making the girls cry again, Master Hargreaves?”

“No matter what I do, they will always cry, Mister Jenkins, so I don't know why you bother to scold me.” The boy dropped down into one of the empty chairs and reached for a scone.

“If only you didn't flirt with so many pretty little girls, you wouldn't break so many pretty little hearts,” he said wisely, but Jezebel only batted his eye lashes and leaned in closer.

“They would cry if I flirted with you instead of them. I just can't win.”

Zakariah drew back. “Nor can I, Master Hargreaves. Nor can I.”
