Chapter One
“You still on for drinks at Bud’s tomorrow?”
“Uh… What?” Jared looked up from the notes he’d been going through to find Chad grinning at him from the other side of the table.
“Drinks? At Bud’s?” Chad clarified.
“Yeah, sure,” Jared said. “Why wouldn’t I be?”
“I don’t know man. You’ve been acting like a hermit lately.”
“I have not. I’ve been helping out at the ranch. They let me live there for free and they pay my tuitions, I think I owe them a few hours of work now and then.”
“A few hours? Man, you’ve been slaving for them pretty much twenty four hours a day.”
Jared frowned. “It wasn’t like they planned for Chuck to break his leg, you know.”
“Whatever,” Chad said, making it clear that the conversation was already boring him. “So you’re on for tomorrow?”
“Yeah,” Jared said. “The new help arrived last night, so I’m off the hook.”
“Good,” Chad got up from the table and clasped him on the shoulder. “See you tomorrow big guy.”
“Yeah,” Jared hummed, diving back into his notes. There would be a quiz on Monday and he owed it to his grandparents to do well.
Ever since his parents died they had been fostering him like a son and he felt like he needed to do well in school and help out on the ranch whenever they needed him. They wouldn’t ever begrudge him his fun, but they weren’t young anymore and he actually wanted to help out. It didn’t matter to him if he missed a few night of drinking, or a date with Sandy. He loved the ranch and his grandparents, which made the choice between work and pleasure pretty easy.
He didn’t expect Chad to actually understand that though. Chad who got everything served on a silver platter by his doting parents and who never had to work a day in his life.
“Hey handsome.”
Jared looked up again as Sandy slid down onto the chair next to him.
“Hey cutie,” he said, giving her the obligatory kiss. She smiled against his lips and ruffled the back of his hair.
“Still keeping up the pretence that I’m your girlfriend?” She asked with a grin.
Jared sighed. “Well you are.”
She shook her head making her hair flutter like a curtain around her face. “You’re too cute. One of these days you’ll just have to admit it.”
Jared didn’t ask her what. He already knew what kind of dead end this conversation was going to end up in. “Sandy…”
“Yeah I know babe. You’re not gay,” she said, but the smile on her face spoke differently.
She pushed the table back and slid on to his lap, wrapping her slim arms around his neck and giving him a long sultry kiss. Jared slid his arms around her, one hand pressing against the small of her back while the other tangled in her long dark hair.
“Now you see,” she said breathlessly when they pulled apart. “Kissing you like this has me all hot and bothered while you…” She shifted meaningfully against the zipper of his jeans. “Are always hot but not the slightest bit bothered.”
“It’s just…”
“That I don’t do it for you?” Her pearly laugh vibrated against his chest. “Get real Padalecki, there is not a straight guy in this school who doesn’t want to get into my panties.”
“Well if I’m so gay, then why are you still my girlfriend?” He asked, burying his nose against her neck and inhaling. “Is that the new Escada?”
She dissolved into helpless laughter, guffawing into his shoulder. “Dear God, Jared. Could you be anymore gay?”
He huffed and pressed a kiss to her delicate collarbone. Okay, so girls didn’t exactly do it for him. Not even Sandy, who fit against his body like a frame and whose toned body and perky little ass had guys catcalling after her wherever she went. That didn’t make him gay, did it? Because guys didn’t exactly do it for him either.
It was highly embarrassing and he’d only ever told Sandy about it, but he’d actually been to the doctor to ask if there was something wrong with him. The doctor had been all nice about it and she’d examined him quite thoroughly, but he’d had a feeling she’d been holding back laughter the entire time. It was just that he was twenty years old and in his prime, shouldn’t he be beating off three times a day like his friends seemed to be doing.
He only ever beat the meat, so to say, when he woke up hard from a dream he couldn’t quite remember and even then it wasn’t all that special. Sure it felt good and stuff, but it wasn’t spectacular or anything. The doctor had listened to his woes and examined him to be sure about it, but she’d promised him it was normal; writing his practically non-existing libido down to the fact that he was confused about his sexuality.
Sandy had laughed for an hour when he told her, wheezing out that even his doctor pegged him for gay, but at least she hadn’t told anyone else. He was sure that he would never live it down if Chad, or maybe even worse Mike, got hold of that information. Sandy was sure that it was his somewhat redneck upbringing that had him all confused inside but Jared still worried.
He didn’t want to be gay, it would just complicate things, but he didn’t want to be an asexual freak either. He’d love for something, or someone, to spark his libido and get him back on track. He did remember what it was like to be fifteen and turned on by everything after all and he kind of missed it.
