I'm taking this class called The Conservative Movement. Like it sounds, its basically about the rise of "conservative" ideology, and how liberal economics and conservative values somehow made it on to the same party platform.
So, I've been reading a lot by old economists, and most of what they're talking about makes sense. As a democrat, these readings raise some serious questions for me. How do we reconcile the ideals of the democratic party with the ideals of the market? By no means do I think the two can't coexist, but it's something that needs to be addressed.
I don't think the republicans are really embracing the market either (ex: no-bid contracts to Halliburton subsidiaries). In general, politicians need to combine the philosophy of 19th century liberalism with the stability of the post-New Deal economy. But if the Democrats can do that, they can take the power back.
