Jet-Setting Part 1

A great deal has happened since we last spoke and by a great deal, I mean more than can fit in this livejournal post. But here's a go at it all.

So, I went to Tennessee, which was absolutely fabulous! I met Emily in Connecticut where from we proceeded to drive 1300 miles down to Tennessee- through five states, past a lot of silos, and accross the Mason-Dixon Line. The trip was stupendously fun and road-trippy. My first introduction to the south was that when we got out at a roadstop in West Virginia (the 1st stop after crossing the M-D line), was that I saw a man in a confederate flag hat. This was only the beginning- I also saw a four-story cross made out of house siding, a Christian club called "Fire Escape", and a terrific billboard on a church that said "Friends Don't Let Friends Go To Hell". Once in TN, Emily and I did a hell of a lot of sunbathing, watched some movies, got addicted to Sex and the City, and sweated to the oldies with Richard Simmons (seriously- it was fun!). We also went to a nearby lake and picnicked with her family and hiked around the base of Bay's Mountain. I met her fabulous friends ("There's a lot of weather!") and spent a great deal of time at Sonic, which I am sad to say doesn't exist in the North because it is the best place ever (cream slushes taste delicious!) Emily and I also attended a bluegrass concert at The Down Home. The group, Uncle Earl(.net), was really excellent and I hope I can bring them to Colby. [By the way SPBers, I'm seriously considering switching to Coffee House to try my hand at bringing good small bands rather than running for Prez in senior year. I actually think I would really even like to switch this semester if possible.]

We then decided to visit her friend who is interning in bumblefuck nowhere, TN (aka Waverly), which is about an hour outside of Nashville. 5 hours and 150 miles of torrential dowpour later, we arrived in Waverly. The town boasts 7 churches, 2 funeral homes, a drive-in movie theatre, a Wal-Mart, and not much else. Needless to say, there wasn't much to do. We ended up playing Kings with Seth and his room mate Mark (two incredible southern gentlemen!) and got sufficiently wasted. The next day we went to Nashville! We went to the state house where we saw a statue of Andrew Jackson and a tomb containing the mortal remains of James K. Polk (Napoleon of the Stump!). We then met up with two other friends and went to the Grand Ole Opry and the Opry Mills Hotel (picture the BBG's indoor environments, but 5 times more beautiful inside of a huge hotel). We then went to a mall where we dined at the cheesy, but fun Rainforest Cafe and where we were affronted by multiple confederate flag shirts in honor of a Dukes of Hazard event that was being held. Along the way to these attractions, we bumped into the Nashville Gay Rights Parade and as Emily would later remark, I was lucky to see two incredibly rare sights in TN (a Southern Jew and the parade). We also saw a life-size recreation of the Parthenon. Upon returning to Waverly, we attended Music In The Square, an event that the entire town of Waverly attended and which featured dancing for kids and a truly superb funk/soul band. I was impressed. We then returned to the duplex for more Kings and debauchery. Good times. The next day, Emily drove me to the aeroport and we sadly parted ways after racking up 1600+ miles on our journey. I'm really sad that I won't see her again until the end of August. (Check out my facebook for pictures of the trip.)

In other news, I went to see X3 last night, which although corny at times, I found to be really entertaining. Well, at least until the movie was over at which point I discovered that my purse had been stolen. Zinger and Tim were good supportive friends and the police man was jolly, which made the situation a little better. Long story short- my bag and a bunch of my stuff were recovered, but the thieves stole my phone and credit cards. Email me your phone numbers (jnbero@colby.edu) or leave a comment so that we're all not incommunicado. For the time being, by the way, I'm using my father's phone, the number of which is 917-573-1041.

And tomorrow I'm headed back up to Maine for a week to organize Party at the Polls. I have secured a band, but the children's activities and food are getting me down! I'm a little worried because a lot doesn't really seem to be coming together, but it always does in the end, so I'm trying to trust in that. I'll be staying in Portland for the first couple days and then heading up to H20ville for the rest of the time. It'll be really interesting to see what it feels like to be more of a resident and less of a college student. I'm amped!

In other news, I spent a fabulous morning with Ariana and got a fantastic haircut this afternoon! So, that makes me feel better about the whole thievery thing. Tomorrow I take off for Portland! Excited like whoa! I'll be back for the Thursday grand opening of Celebrate Brooklyn featuring Maceo Parker. I'm so freaking excited! A couple of my Colby friends will be down as well and we should all go. I'm currently using my dad's phone if anyone needs to get in contact with me (and should a propos to the concert!). Yea! So, umm... I guess this email replaces some of the newsy emails I was going to write. Linds- I'll write to you asap about other matters.

Talk to you all next Wednesday!
