Honestly, it's all rather ridiculous and complicated otherwise. If you merely marry who will be best for the kingdom... that takes all the difficulty out of it.

I suppose that it does, and I know that my father won't pick anybody who'd treat me badly. I'll be taken care of, some coot will gain Imperial clout, and that will be that.

Well, he'll very likely be noticeably older than me. Perhaps not a coot. That's probably a mean thing to say about somebody that I'm going to marry.

Well, at least someone relatively close to your age.

Well, somebody close to my age likely wouldn't be in a position of power. Political marriages are power-based, after all.

Yes, but someone your age might be in a position to inherit some power. Why would your father saddle you with someone old who's going to die soon anyways? Most likely the title would then pass into the hands of the closest male relative. It would be more sensible to marry you to someone near your own age who will grow into power and you'll be connected with for more than just a decade at most.

I am meant to have children, you realize. Likely immediately. My children will inherit, so there's no need to worry about that sort of thing.

But you're tiny. Surely they can't expect you to bear that many children, if any?

Of course they expect it, and I'm surely capable. Women of my heritage are all similarly sized, and all of them have done just fine. I'm here, aren't I?

Besides, one son and I'm victorious. One.
