Recital in the ghetto

Feb 16, 2009 12:14

Yesterday was strange.

My teacher gave me an address for the recital hall that I was supposed to play Bach at. The neighborhood is pretty far, so after driving for about 45 minutes I finally got to the West branch of SMS. (I usually attend the MLC (south) branch)

The building itself is pretty beautiful. It's all creamy and mansion-y. It's got this pretty gate around it too.

The neighborhood is not. I was so scared I would get shot or something. More than that, I was scared that a passerby would take interest in my violin and rob me. I'm seriously going to reject every offer that takes place over there from now on, it was absolutely terrifying ._.

I met my accompanist just an hour before the recital. I didn't know I would be getting an accompanist. I didn't even know there was an accompaniment for my piece (Bourree from Bach's Unaccompanied Cello Suite No. 3) XD The accompaniment sounded weird, too, it kinda threw me off. She proved to be valuable, though - when I froze up and stopped in the middle of it (I had forgotten the next part) she whispered "It's E, F#, G," and as soon as those three notes came out the rest of the notes came fluidly.

I got a huge applause because I'd performed some really tricky techniques, like the opening triple stops (playing three strings at once with trills) and fourth finger extensions (normally if you put your pinky down on the E string you produce a B - I stretched it to play a C).

I am SO thankful to my accompanist, I would've looked really bad if it weren't for her.

Wow, I was so stressed out before, but now that the Bach is off my shoulders I'm not -Laughs.- It's all Vivaldi, Mozart, and Ravel from here!
