goodbye, dear Alero

We went to Sami's birthday party in Lafayette last night. Kevin drank lots of beer, because there was a keg. I had about two glasses of wine (sangria, hooray) spread over three and a half hours, so I drove home. We left Sami and Adam's a little before 2am. It's just under a 2 hour drive back to our apartment. We were very nearly back in Jefferson Parish when I changed lanes to pass a driver (changed from middle to left lane). I also tapped on my brakes to slow down because I was driving a speed that was suitable for the interstate but too fast for being in the city.

When I did, my brakes locked and my car skidded. It clipped the guardrail (this part of the interstate is a bridge over water/swamp), spun, and then slammed head-on into the guardrail. The airbags deployed, which resulted in me having a split lip and a nosebleed and Kevin having a bruise on one cheek - that's the extent of our physical injuries.

My car is, barring some kind of car miracle, totaled. I can't drive Kevin's car; he has a standard and I am literally incapable of driving it. It looks like there's a rental car in my near future while we sort this out, which sucks because rental cars are expensive. This all really, really sucks because the drain on my finances is almost certainly going to make it impossible to go to London next summer. FML. My stepmom did say that if Dad's shop does really well and they have the money, she'd love to send me to London (as in, pay for the trip itself). But the shop doesn't bring in that kind of money.

tl;dr: We're healthy and not hurt, but my car is beat which means that financially I am fucked. I hate winter. Every damn year something goes horrendously wrong during the winter.

Edit: A couple of years back, before Kevin bought his car, he and I were sharing mine. One of his coworkers - an annoying girl I've complained about before named Emily - didn't have a car for a while, and Kevin/I wound up giving her rides to and from work a lot. It was frustrating at the time, but today when Kevin was telling everyone what had happened, she volunteered her car for me, for Monday at least and possibly for the whole week, specifically because I was so helpful and nice when she didn't have a car. Karma++. Kevin's mom likewise says I might be able to use her SUV for a while. There's only three more weeks in the semester, and it looks like I will be able to get through this between rental cars and other people being helpful.

Kevin and I have both spent a lot of the day telling people what happened and basically trying to make plans for the next few weeks. I find it kind of telling that my plans have involved things like tweaking my budget and looking up rental prices, and his have involved finding people with cars I can borrow/who can give me a ride to campus as needed. I want to fix the situation, and he wants to take care of me, and overall we just work really well together ^^
