How do you define the word 'friendship?'

So basically, I was chatting with a co-worker one day and talking about the lack of friends in my life, and they were like 'do you not consider me a friend? I consider everyone to be my friend.' But I guess I don't. Or I do, but not in the way they mean.

I guess, I tend to label people a lot. People are either 'friends from work.' Or 'friends from school' or 'online friends' etc.

But to me, I guess when I think of the word 'friend', I think of the friends I had back when I was a kid, before we all lost touch and they lost interest in me. A friend to me is someone you can tell your life story to, someone that you can hang out with outside of work/school, etc. A friend is someone who will call you just to chat and see how you're doing. I don't have that anymore and I guess I miss it.

I ended up asking an online buddy about it and her response was that unless you can pick up the phone and call a person and ask them for a favour and not have it be weird, then you're not really friends. You're friendly acquaintances. And I guess I would have to agree.

Thoughts? Opinions?
