CAFFEINE

Caffeine
It's weird how much I've become depended on the legal drug known as caffeine.

I would say I am an occasional coffee drinker.  When social situations call for a "cup of coffee", I don't mind having a cup.  Tea I would say, is pretty much a regular.  Earl Grey, Green Tea, 보리차 (boricha), etc.
Red Bull (sugarfree red bull is absolutely disgusting), Rockstar (Guava, Passion Fruit), Monster, Jolt Chewing Gum, etc.  I don't drink/consume these unless I have a midterm, final, or big paper due.  They throw in a little variety (flavor and carbonation) when I want something other than coffee.

Those familiar with the semester system probably know that we are entering a crucial period  of the school year.  No, I am not talking about football season, although I am definitely a fan of college football (GO BEARS!).  I am referring to midterms.  For the past week or so, I've been up-ing my normal dosage of caffeine.  Last week, I think I drank a Rockstar in addition to my daily cup of coffee.  Was that last week? I can't remember.

With 5 midterms coming up in the next 3/2 of a week (= a week and a half... haha), I feel that I am left no choice.  I must stay up.  I must study, (and I must check my email and facebook every 30 minutes).  Last night (technically this morning), I slept at 5AM, and woke up at 9:53 AM to go to my 10AM class.

I've been doing it big lately.  In addition to my regular dosage of coffee (with added cream and sugar), I decided that I need something more.  ESPRESSO! (Lattes in particular).  (I learned yesterday that a Latte is espresso with foam and whole-milk.  Capuccino: foam and espresso.  Americano: Espresso and water).

I've noticed that all this caffeine has had a major impact on my body, and it has become a routine.  I drink my coffee in the evening/night, study until 4-5AMish, sleep around 5 hours, go to my 10AM class, finish school go to work, and by the evening, I am back to drinking my cup of coffee.

I must say that all this caffeine has had a tremendous effect on my life.  I wake up to go to class, and somehow manage to make it through the day (although I often fall asleep during lectures).  However, I go through the day feeling like a zombie.  Even if I sleep in and manage to sleep the recommended 8 hours (sometimes even 9 hours!), I can't "wake up".  Over the weekend.  I slept for a total of 12 hours.  I was awake, but not awake.  I was physically alert, but not mentally alert... if that makes any sense.  I wake up, but I don't feel like I ever slept.  I feel physically incapable of doing anything.  The other day, I was walking home from a class, and felt that I just couldn't make it all the way.  So I stopped at the Free Speech Movement Cafe on campus, and ordered you know what.

Remember I explained what a Latte is made out of?  I mentioned milk.  I think I forgot to mention that I am lactose intolerant (to a certain extent).  Oh yeah! The bathroom is not a relieving place anymore.  It's more like a torture chamber.

Today I came home from school, skipped the caffeine part, and took a 3 hour nap.  Oh boy!!! I woke up with a tremendous headache!  Need I explain?  I walked over to Peet's Coffee, and ordered a 16 oz. Latte with 3 shots of espresso.  This time I thought of my physical well-being (hah!), and asked for soy milk instead of whole milk.  And poof! My headache was gone.

Alot of people might say that all this is my fault, and I completely agree.
Procrastination is bad.  Very bad!  CAFFEINE BAD!
However, for the next 3/2 weeks, I am left with no choice, and I am looking forward to the crash i will experience after all my beautiful midterms are finished.

P.S.
DON'T DO DRUGS!

P.P.s
I think Korean people first invented energy drinks.  Remember Bacchus (바카스)?
Guess what that is??? An energy drink.
I used to always drink it when the lady at the Korean Market gave my mom and dad a bottle (and my sister and I the yogurt soft drink).  My parents told me it was bad.  I didn't understand.
Hey, at least it had Vitamin D in it.
