I like Quebec and Quebeckers. I do, Montreal and Quebec City are fun places, and I have nothing against Quebeckers as a people. They do their thing. But, they are also the most selfish and conceited in this country.
Current Quebec tuition levels are frozen at approx $1668 per year, and one proposal by Mr. Charest to corrent the shortfall in university revenue is to increase that by $100/year for five years, bascially changing it to $2168 per year by 2012. Now I do agree that it's at best a short term solution and at worst a superficial one, it is now not that unreasonable considering that by 2012 they will still be paying less than a quarter of what I'm paying CURRENTLY in tuition (and by 2012 I'm sure tuition here will have gone up by quite a bit).
"We don't want to be thrown back 40 years when only people with money went to university."
Shut the FUCK up. As much as I like your province, it contributed VERY little for the rest of the country, and gets a shit load of money in return from Ontario and Alberta because all you people can do is fucking bitch and whine about how fucking unique your culture is. I don't give a shit, at this point, your economy looks like crap and you're a fucking drain on this country. Pull yourself together and do something useful for a change.
You bitch and whine about Alberta and I must say, I don't agree with them on a lot of issues, but at least they are generating a lot of money for this country. Without them, Canada would be without a large source of income from oil sands and other various industries. I think I can live without poutine given a choice.
Fiscal imbalance my ass. What other province has tuition NEAR that level? And if you think $2168 a year is "only people with money" (factoring in inflation, it would be worth even less), then what kind sorry state are you people in?
Let me do the break down for you. Let's say you have an annual income of $37 178 per year. I use this number because after taxes (15.5%) and vacation pay (4%) we have $29 928.29 a year, which isn't a lot of money, getting close to the poverty line. Let's say single parent with one kid making that. One bedroom (with that income 2 bedrooms would be a bit unreasonable), is $900 (all figures per month) per month. Food is $800. Life insurance, $100. Metro pass for 2 people, $200. Miscellaneous (shampoo, etc.) $100. Clothing, $100. Internet, Cable, and phone, $100. Totals to $2300, or $27 600 per year. Subtracting, we get $2328.29, and with tuition, we get $160.29 left over. Are you telling me that the average family is so poor that they are making less than that a year? And granted there will be a few poorer families, so I say, GET A FUCKING LOAN. It's what a lot of middle class families in other provinces do. A lot of lower income also consists of new immigrants to this country, and it's hard for them. But you don't even like immigrants, Quebec, and they have to go through the same in othe provinces. They also don't even get the lower tuition unless they've lived there for a while, and by then, chances are they've moved up economically.
PLUS, the costs I've used, you're living standard ain't to bad. Food factors in eating out once a week, high speed internet, etc. Also, with that low of an income, and for single parent, you are eligible for bursaries from the university meaning you pay even less.
Average household income in Quebec is $48.50 / hour, which becomes $100 880 a year, or after taxes (22%) and vaction (4%), $74 651.20. Personal income is $28.90, or $60 112 a year, and after taxes (22%) and vaction (4%), $44 482.88.
I love Quebec, it's a great province. I have a lot of fun there, and there is a pretty cool culture that is unique. I don't want them to seperate, it would be bad for the country. But grow up. You have been leeching off the rest of Canada for far too long and we've just turned a blind eye. A landed immigrant that can't even apply for citizenship yet is contributing more than you, a Quebecker who has grown up in this country. So please, try not to piss the rest of us hardworking Canadians whose tax money is going to you, and quit your bitching and whining.
