Okay I've been terrible about putting enough time into my writing per week, and less noticeably to my readers, not much exercise either. However I did buy a telescope to get me started. It's a
Celestron Astromaster 76EQ Reflector which should be enough to get me started. Unfortunately the weather has not been very cooperative, as it is either cloudy at night, or insanely cold. In fact we just had a huge snowstorm Friday which closed everything down across the province (including my school), which is very unusual for Nova Scotia considering the severity of winter weather to begin with.
Down the road.
Me (left of the door in orange coat) in front of my closed school.
I think I may go out tonight, but it is rather cold. However, I have a dedicated place to scope from, because the first place I went to I got chased of the property. It was the access road down to the sewage treatment plant for the village which I figured would be permissible, as it was ideal being in a field. As soon as I got there, some suspicious neighbour with one very powerful flashlight blinded me and then called one of the village staff. The staff guy wasn't mean as he was called by someone else, but I wasn't allowed to use the property, but he suggested other areas that would be acceptable. Anyway, I think I'll check out Mars, which a
friend was photographing yesterday.
Also, I've been starting up a Dungeons & Dragons campaign for the first time in a while, so Karen and I have something to do on weekends out here. I got the 4th Edition rules set for Christmas, and I rather like their back to basics design approach with the rules as D&D badly needed it. However I am not a fan of their new focus on "excitement" to the detriment of non-combat role playing. They even subjected their main setting,
Forgotten Realms, to the magical equivalent of a nuclear holocaust in order to make it more "exciting". Fortunately, the rules are flexible enough that I can devise settings and things that don't involve skewering Orcs and looting tombs.
Some thoughts on the D&D later though.
