Maui - Day Two (First Full Day)

Feb 02, 2009 23:53

Sunrise at 6:30 - the doves hooting and other crazy bird calls start at first light. Kona coffee in the maker and out to the deck for a cup or two. I missed sunrise on the beach - but after coffee I walked down to explore the unnamed beach across the street - a great place to watch the sun set. Small, sheltered - but no swimming - (West Kihei is pretty well known as having some nasty water due to run off)
Hit the drug store for a beach towel, snacks and a water bottle, then off to Maui Dive to rent snorkel gear.
Keawakapu beach was blew away the guys, that beach is an eyeful. We were out in the ocean when the winds started to pick up - (normally the winds kick up in South Maui in the afternoon)
We packed it up and drove to the Wailea Marriott to have lunch with the groom-to-be, John Boyle. Nice place. While exploring the infinity pool there we saw whales breaching in the distance.
While watching the whales playing a large palm branch came crashing down on an (unoccupied) padded, lounge chair. No rich folks were injured.
Off to Kama'ole III to snorkel - Destiny and Justin hit the water for their first try at it - although the water was getting rough at this time of the day, they had a great time and saw tons of fish and a sea turtle. While watching the guys snorkel I saw a whale smacking his tail in the water three times - then lifting it straight up out of the water and slowing sinking out of sight.
Celene and I went to Maui tattoo to set up our appointments then back to the Tiki Love Shack to clean up for Mama's Fish Shack in Pai'a.
There we met up with Jerry and Lori Lee Haener - fresh from driving all the way around the island. The Mama's is amazing - open air, fun, laid back, a killer view and right on the beach.
10:30 and now we're hanging at the 'shack. More rum and mango, and maybe a cigar.
Tomorrow - whale watching and a luau.
