i've been wanting to buy black hole by charles burns for what seems like AGES. but there were like 10 copies or so sitting on the shelf that i always felt safe in delaying its purchase. even when the numbers started dwindling had i never felt threatened by the possibility that there will be none left for me when i want to buy one. better still, should a paperback version be published, i would even be able to save $20 or so.
anyway, all i want to say is that i wanted to buy it today because kinokuniya was having a 20% sale but they sold out. poo.
instead, i think i shall get that new osamu tezuka book.
oh, maybe lots of people feel really uncool admitting that they do, but i have to say that i like harry potter very much indeed. although my love for it can only be attributed to the fact that i was an 'early adopter'. had i discovered it after the hype started building up, i think i would be in the other camp instead.
when book 5 was released, i was a maniac and pre-ordered my copy and even got up bright and early at 8am to get it (although there was no queue and i had to pay retail as it was from a specialty bookshop).
book 6 was ushered into my life with little fanfare, just at kinokuniya and with a 10% discount.
i'm still excited about book 7 although i have a feeling i already know how the story might wrap up. in terms of character development, everyone's holding out for snape's story. hero or villain? i personally hope he turns out to be a bit of both and not just either one, because that makes him less of a children's storybook character. in fact, sometimes i feel that people misunderstand the underlying subject of the series. because should you care to analyze, underneath the cloak of this magical world seemingly built for pre-teens, there is a deeper theme that runs through all 7 books - one that deals with death, social acceptance, and many other such 'adult' ideas.
so come july 21st, you should be able to find me joining in the first-day madness once again. only that i would be buying mine at the nearest Target at noon, and hopefully with an introductory price of less than $30.
