Summary: Cheondong collects his memories of people, preserving them like some preserve flowers by pressing them between the pages of a book. These are his flowers.

He was Cheondong’s best friend and dream lover. They laughed at the same stupid jokes, argued for the sheer pleasure of debate, and shared more in silence than most people share over a lifetime of talking. The sky gleamed a little bluer and the sun shone a little brighter when he was around. Cheondong wondered how he spent so many years missing the beauty of birdsong and blooming flowers. The world became a veritable buffet for his senses and he knew this was love.
When the doctor said cancer, he felt his chest collapse. He watched his lover’s face pale and crumble. Pancreatic cancer. Incurable and too far gone for treatment to be effective. The symptoms masked for too long as other things and now there was nothing the medical profession could do, so sorry. The apology rang hollow in Cheondong’s ears later that night as he held his lover’s weeping body. It resounded discordantly months later as he watched the gleaming box lowered into the winter ground.
When the memories shifted and sifted through his mind, in the middle of the night or at high noon, he wanted to laugh and cry and scream and break things. He wanted that quicksilver smile and old whiskey laugh. He needed those strong arms and agile mind. Even with time, the pain didn’t lessen but was merely overtaken by the effusive warmth of memories too good to ignore or forget.
He remembered those last days, cuddled by his lover’s emaciated frame. A gentle, shaky finger stroked over his cheekbone and a raspy voice whispered, “Take care of yourself, love, until we meet again.”
