I saw the diff when the basketball playa - a playa in his own right - came down with it. All of a sudden, being straight and promiscuous wasn't as "bad-ass" as folks once thought. And it became downright scary.
I'm no fan of ACT UP (there were better ways of getting attention and keeping it - though the did reclaim the Stonewall spirit, I'll give them that), because as Justin states they did set us back in many ways - but I definitely think you're on to something here! BY g_e_o_r_g_e, I THINK I'M INSPIRED!!
Fair enough, as long as the desperate measures don't amount to aiming the enemy in your crosshairs and then turning the gun around and shooting yourself in the face.
We could argue all day about the communicative value of "screaming in people's face"...
i don't think you HAVE to argue just answer one simple question which would then lead to an examination of the response...
if a "compassionate" christian conservative started all up in your grill about gay this gay that you're going to hell blah blah whatever, what would your reaction be?
at the very least i'm sure you'd think they were a COMPLETE idiot at most you'd probably want to pummel them until they didn't exist anymore but in general i'm guessing you would think something along the lines of "this guy is a total psycho and if he's talking about [insert thing here] then i'm certainly not going to have much if ANYTHING to do with [insert thing here]" i think that's a normal reaction i think that's how most gay folks react to the zealots
now, i don't want to put words in xtex's mouth, but what i'm getting from his response is
( ... )
I think we should demand that churches that use their pulpits and organizations to promote ANY policy - including anything anti-gay - have their tax exempt status revoked
*points excitedly*
yesyesyes i am SO there *actually, i've been saying that for years*
uh... screaming and getting in folks' faces was precisely what gandhi and king did, to notable success.
act up taught america that to be a fag was not to be a victim.
did i approve of all their actions (if you can make a collective claim about a completely decentralized group)? no. did they do more good than harm? absolutely.
