Some atheists are reasonable, some are assholes.
What makes all the above stories heinous is not necessarily the religious beliefs of the participants (or lack thereof), but the fact that they were all seriously deluded assholes.
Sure, there was tremendous carnage (on both sides) during the Crusades. But Hitler and his minions massacred millions in the name of a Darwinian "superior race" notion (despite his lip service with "Gott mit uns"), and who can forget the millions more killed in the Ukraine under Stalin, or Cambodia under Pol Pot, or even in China under Mao - all atheist communist leaders.
When religionists go wrong, they usually have some kind of constraints on their evil (because, after all, they are doing it in some kind of twisted perversion of some moral code); however, when atheists go wrong, often they have no such constraints (For example, when communists have their bloody purges, their rationale can only be to be a self-serving consolidation of personal power, not any nobler ulterior motive).
