Why is it that most Americans view gay marriage as something that is just crazy to consider for legalization? Americans don't realize that economically we could improve if we allowed all gay couple to be married. I mean there are bumper stickers that say "if you don't agree with abortion don't get one" so why not “if you don't agree with gay marriage don't marry a gay person"? If Americans would allow gay marriage we would be making more money from marriage licenses, divorce lawyers, party planners, etc. we would also be able to help stop the spread of STDs, because if given an ultimate commitment to look forward to, more gay people would probably abstain from sex until they found their life partners. I think we should allow gay marriage if for no other reason than the fact that this is America and, whether we like it or not, gay people are Americans too. They deserve the same rights as all other Americans. I recently received an email about why every argument against gay marriage can be discounted.
Top Ten against Gay Marriage
1) Being gay is not natural…
And Real Americans always reject unnatural things like eyeglasses, polyester, and air conditioning.
1) Gay marriage will encourage people to be gay...
In the same way that hanging around tall people will make you tall.
2) Legalizing gay marriage will open the door to all kinds of crazy behavior...
People may even wish to marry their pets because a dog has legal standing and can sign a marriage contract.
3) Straight marriage has been around a long time and hasn’t changed at all...
Women are still property, blacks still can’t marry whites, and divorce is still illegal.
4) Straight marriage will be less meaningful if gay marriage were allowed...
Because the sanctity of Brittany Spears’ 55-hour “just-for-fun” marriage would be destroyed.
5) Straight marriages are valid because they produce children.
Gay couples, infertile couples, and old people shouldn’t be allowed to marry because our orphanages aren’t full yet, and the world needs more children.
6) Obviously gay parents will raise gay children...
Since straight parents only raise straight children.
7) Gay marriage is not supported by religion.
In a theocracy like ours, the values of one religion are imposed on the entire country. That’s why we have only one religion in America.
8) Children can never succeed without a male and a female role model at home...
That’s why we as a society expressly forbid single parents to raise children.
9) Gay marriage will change the foundation of society...
We could never adapt to new social norms. Just like we haven’t adapted to cars, the service-sector economy, or longer life spans.
At first I wanted to laugh at these but when I looked at them more closely, I
Realize that while there is some humor to these, they are still very true. I know that in my religion, being gay is a sin, but we aren't living in Iraq where there is one national religion. We are the country that gives equal rights to everyone. We are the country that people came to escape persecution but we are still keeping a majority of Americans from a right. The right to love another. That is a right, just like the freedom of speech, the freedom of religion, etc, that we should never, NEVER try to take away from people. So in conclusion, why shouldn't we allow gay marriage? If you can only come up with a reason pertaining to the Christian standpoint of "it's a sin" then maybe you should move to a country without freedom of religion so that you can impose your beliefs on everyone.
