After her husband's death, 29-year-old Holly Kennedy has to learn how to live without the man who's shared her life since they were children. Shortly before her 30th birthday, she discovers he left her a few letters - one for every month until the year ends - to help her face her new life.
I should start by saying I should've loved this book. I'm usually a big fan of "chick-lit", I love me a light fluffy story, and some of my favourite books would definitely be in the same category as this one. And yet, I couldn't get into it. I first started it back in 2009, and I quickly got bored and abandoned it around page 100. But last month a friend gave it to me for my birthday, so I figured I'd give it another shot. I finished it out of pride - "you're not gonna beat me twice, book" - but I still didn't enjoy it all that much.
I think my problem was basically the fact that I didn't like Holly very much. I was much more interested in some of the minor characters - Sharon and Richard, mainly - than on Holly herself, and sometimes I just wanted to shake her and tell her to get a grip. Maybe that makes me an insensitive ice queen, I don't know.
Holly aside, the book is all right. It has some funny bits and a few sweet ones, and it's a light and easy read. If you like this kind of story, chances are you're gonna enjoy it. There's nothing ground-breaking or particularly deep and powerful about it - not that I'd expect it in a romantic comedy book - but there's nothing to outright hate either.
All in all, I don't think it was a terrible book. It's just not a very good one.
