You have to realise that we are the enemy in a lot of places too - why are we honoured there? Head over to Gallipoli, where we went to attack and kill the Turks - they now hold the largest dawn service in the world for Anzac Day [as well as a parade], honouring both sides. It's the same in Singapore, where the British attempted to regain control, and we joined in the fight. Australian troops have killed thousands of the enemy on their own soil, and been remembered for it
( ... )
Fair call as long as both sides are remembered if it was a fair fight (as fair as can be in a war). But the way the report I read portrayed the whole thing was a bit insane. Like they were Aussies or something. There was one line mentioning how the fallen Australians & Brits were thought of. But an entire article was dedicated to saying how brave and great these 2 Japanese sailors were and praising their "achievements". I didnt get it. Im not a history buff by any means, but it did seem insane that we were making a huge deal over it.
There's a plaque at the War Memorial as well, it really did seem a bit over the top. I understand the message and reasoning behind it, but it really felt like it was glorified a fair bit. Where did you get this article? *please be net-based!* I can't understand why they would be making anything of it now, considering the 65yr anniversary was at the end of May!
What they did still remains 'brave', and 'heroic' in their country, even if not in ours. Australians demand that kind of respect in places that we've attempted to tear to shreds, I suppose it's only fair we give them the same honour.
... How are you, by the way? I should be back in Sydney at the end of Jan! You coming up here anytime soon? I think your mum should move to Brisbane so that you can come get drunk with me, and not have to find a way back to Caboolture. Tell her that for me. :o)
I understand peoples willingness to acknowledge the efforts of the deceased but to have memorial services both on land and on the water, and have a parade for them was a bit nuts. I read it in the paper the other day, cant remember which one it was, im sure its lying around here somewhere lol. If i find it ill let you know.
Im good, I dont think I will be seeing mum until Feb next yr. My cousin is getting married then so Ive gotta make the trip up North for it. I probably could have come up for xmas or something... if i didnt crash my car. All my savings are gone now.. stupid excess!! But I will definately let you know when i head back up your way xx
