I was deeply saddened today to learn of the death of Johnny Cash and also - a huge suprise - John Ritter. John Ritter was on Three's Company and was very well respected as an actor, comedian, father, and husband. Last night he was filming his show with Harry Wilkler (The Fonz) as a special guest star and he started getting really sick. He was with his wife Amy and oldest son and he died as soon as he got to the hospital.

I love Johnny Cash and his wife, June Carter Cash, dearly. I grew up hearing the music of The Carter Family, and Johnny Cash. As you may or may not know, Johnny Cash's wife, June, is the daughter of legendary Maybelle Carter, who was part of the group The Carter Family. Their 1927 recordings are among the first country music recordings in history. I have had the pleasure of hearing some of the first recordings and the music is very old sounding, like traveling back in time and really feeling the music. June Carter Cash passed away in May and Johnny Cash never really recovered from her death. In Johnny Cash's autobiography he spoke of the degree of love and respect he felt for her - "June said she knew me -- knew the kernel of me, deep inside, beneath the drugs and deceit and despair and anger and selfishness, and knew my loneliness," he wrote. "She said she could help me. ... If she found my pills, she flushed them down the toilet. And find them she did; she searched for them, relentlessly."
They were married for 35 years.
And early this morning, Johnny Cash died. Here is a link to a wonderful article about his life - The Man in Black.
