2013I finished another book in 2013 before the year ended.
23. KEEPER OF THE KEYS by Janny Wurts
Now I know how WoT fans feel about CROSSROADS OF TWILIGHT. I feel like the entire book was spent to build to one character making one decision, and even when he did it was grudging and he petulantly still did not want to do it. :P
2014
1. SHADOWFANE by Janny Wurts
The final book in the Cycle of Fire trilogy. It was nice to have the story start back up again and /move/. I did not like the chain jerking done towards the end. It was an emotional roller coaster for the last 100 pages that I did not appreciate. I also did not enjoy the ending, as it was so dark.
The trilogy as a whole had a very solid pacing, it never raced or plodded. It settled into what it wanted to be (more sci fi than fantasy, but still some fantastical aspects) by the end of the first book and didn't stray. It was a coming of age at a time when the world goes to heck in a hand basket. I don't see what my friend who lent it to me adores about it.
2. HEART OF BRIAR by Laura Anne Gilman
Another rockin' mystery/urban fantasy that Gilman excels at. It's somewhat like the Cosa books, but more sinister. A fantastic ride to fight for what is hers, learning about things one does not normally see, the protagonist is full of awesome and win.
3. SOUL OF FIRE by Laura Anne Gilman
The conclusion of the duology, that had several twists, turns, surprises, and frankly a bit of disappointment. I was sad that the story was over when I reached the end, but the last 3 pages upset me, so I was sort of glad. Gilman loves to lead you right up to a major point, and then let it hang and leave the specifics to your imagination. She also likes to tease and leave you wondering about some questions she left unanswered.
Note: I won both of the Laura Anne Gilman books and promised to do reviews publicly. I did so on Amazon and Goodreads (the same review, but different from what is here.)
