18. OUT OF OZ by Gregory Maguire
I was happily surprised that the typical allegory of Maguire rarely existed, and that only at the very end, in this book. That I caught. It was a slog. Not the worst of the series, but not the amazing work that WICKED was. I am glad to see an end to this series, though there are tiny loop holes that he could expand further upon. I'm not a fan of his work, but I like finishing up series as well as it was a gift from my husband. :P
19. HARD MAGIC by Laura Anne Gilman
Laura Anne I am a huge fan and slightly e-stalkerish of. I had tweeted to ask if it was ok to read this before the 6 books in the Retriever series, with no response so I dove in. (I also read the FAQ and hunted around her site for the answer and didn't find it.) I really wish that I had, in hindsight. I was able to survive and there were several cleverly done infodumps so that if one didn't know about the Retriever series you'd be AOK and feel that the book was super awesome. :)
This book is clearly Laura Anne's sweet spot. I remember all her cackling on Twitter while writing this, and with good reason. She had me in stitches. The characters are well written and developed - with lots of room to grow in the future. The plot flowed nicely with some nifty twists and turns, although a few were predictable.
The only flaw was my going into the book/series with too much information. I felt this BIG build up to a particular scene, and that this scene was supposed to be a Big Deal, but with the fringe knowledge and not having read the Retriever series I felt that I was missing something big. It is a credit to her skills that I could tell all this without having the background.
I was so enthused about the book, that I immediately dove into the sequel, PACK OF LIES, and raved about it enough to convince my mom to pick up the Retriever series. ;)
