New exciting thing happening.

Well. I got into law school. So far, I got into Western New England (eh...) and Vermont (<3). This is really exciting for me because, well, I didn't want to not be in school next year. I always thought I hated being in school, hated the structure of school, hated the hierarchy. But I realized that I always loved the learning part of it, and I didn't want to be without that. And I think that even though this is more formal school, it's about subjects that I love. I can't wait until my second year when I can actually start learning the public interest stuff. I mean I guess I need to learn all the basics before starting my concentration or whatever it's called in law school but I'm still really thrilled. I really believe that I'll be good at helping people and defending them and fighting for them.

It sort of sucks that some people are like "oh, well you're gonna be a lawyer and make lots of money" and then when I say "no no I'm doing public interest, I actually want to help people" they look at me like I'm crazy. Or that people make jokes or snide comments about it, which I've heard. Or worse, be my dad and get disappointed. My dad thinks that my saying I wanted to do public interest was a ruse for the law schools because standards are a bit lower to get in that way and they'll help me pay off my tuition if I go into public interest. While I do appreciate that part of some schools' commitment to the public interest, that was never my goal.

Yeah, I'll probably be the poorest lawyer in the world, but I really don't care. I learned a long time ago that it's more important to love what you're doing in your work than to make tons of money at it. You can always find a way to spend all your money, no matter how much you make, and I don't need lots of things. So maybe I will just move to Vermont and live in a solar-powered house with my husband and children Stella and Brody and my cat Gabe and my fuel efficient car and be obscenely happy. I dunno. But you're all invited to visit, if/when that happens.
