Syrinx and I are sort of competing this year to see who wins NaNoWriMo. This'll be my 5th year participating, and I've never won before, but fifth time's the charm... I'm pretty sure I've read that somewhere. Probably the Bible. Sure, why not

I thought Amir was out of school?
Anyway, now that your husband's academic success rides on your ability to write more than a hundred words a day, do you want to have, maybe, scheduled write-ins a couple of times a week? Obviously we couldn't physically get together and set our laptops up next to each other and type away, but maybe we could agree on a day and time (like, every Monday and Wednesday at 8pm, or whatever works. that's just an example), both get on AIM or YahooIM during that time, and basically be like "GO!" Then for the next [duration of time] we "race" to see who write [additional number of words] first, or we just go for that duration of time and at the end share how many additional words we've just written.
It wouldn't have to be that competitive. It'd just be a way to hoist some accountability on both of us to get our word counts up. Also it'd be an excuse to chat on IM afterwards. :-P
At home by yourself you could use a timer, or your cell phone's alarm, or an internet countdown website, and give yourself, say, thirty minutes of hardcore writing time here or there during which you can't stop typing? After all, if it's NaNo chances are it's going to be a rush job anyway. That's the general idea. At the end, whether or not you like what you've written, at least you wrote something, you know?

I think that would be a great way to be accountable, and I can find out where Amir got his program that blocks Internet surfing for 15-30 minutes.
He is done with his bachelor's and his first master's, but he signed up for a second to keep him in the country before we got married. He's going to take a semester or two off, but he's got to get done with this class, which he hates. It's online, so it's actually more work than the in-class one. But as many money problems as we're having now, it's hard for me at least to justify us paying another $1,400. However, I can totally understand how frustrated he is. He's been going to school for about 8-9 years and is beyond burned out.

But on the write-ins, I usually work Thursday-Saturday during the day, and Sundays a little later (I get home around 7pm, but I'm usually dead tired). Okay, so no Saturdays for you and no Sundays for me. It looks like we both have Mondays off. And heeeey... it looks like today is Monday! Do you want to give it a shot tonight, maybe at like 7pm, if you don't already have other plans? Once we see how our first write-in goes, maybe then we can determine how often we'd be willing to do that.
You prefer AIM, right?
