Title: What People Think
Author: Jessie
Pairing: Jared/Jensen
Rating: PG-13
Genre: Fluff/Humor
Summary: Jared discovers that the fans think he and Jensen are a couple, and reacts.
Disclaimer: I don't own Jared and Jensen and it would be weird if I did. I don't own Supernatural. These events are 99% fiction and 1% wishful thinking. Or something like that.

Note: Just a quick plot bunny that wouldn't leave me alone, I'm still working on "Careful What You Wish For" but thought I'd get this to you all while you waited. Enjoy!

----------

It started on a Thursday.

Jensen was sitting in his trailer in between takes, running over his monologue which was to be shot later that day, when Jared barged into his trailer. This in itself wasn’t unusual of course, but Jared’s look of complete and utter panic was.

“Jared,” Jensen jumped up immediately, “What happened? Are you okay?” He tried to put a hand on his arm but Jared jerked away with a squeal - a squeal -, eyes wide, flickering all over the trailer before finally landing on Jensen, and then quickly averting again.

“So, uh, yeah, um…” Jared babbled, “I er…”

“Just spit it out Jared,” Jensen said, anxious for what it was that had his friend so uncharacteristically tongue-tied.

“I was just online…”

“Oh no,” Jensen breathed. Nothing good ever followed that sentence.

“And I saw… us… together.” Jared finished, eyes wide and panicked.

Jensen frowned. “What do you mean, together?”

“Together! Kissing! Hugging! Doing stuff!”

Jared’s expression was now so panicked, his arms were flailing, Jensen couldn’t help it. He laughed.

“This is so not funny!” Jared squeaked.

“Would you pull yourself together you big girl?” Jensen asked between guffaws, “We’ve never done anything! It’s some fan with Photoshop and way too much time on their hands, as usual.” Jensen really didn’t understand the so-called Internet mentality, and his general policy was to ignore it all together rather than to bother with it. He thought he and Jared had been on the same page on that one.

“I know,” Jared said, “Obviously, but man, it looks so damn real! And you know there are people out there who think we’re together, that we’re just living in our house and playing family with my dogs and that we’re gonna get married and-”

“Jared,” Jensen interrupted his tirade, “You knew this already! Why do you suddenly act like it matters what people think?”

Jared completely ignored this. “Maybe it’s the way I walk,” he mumbled absent-mindedly, and to Jensen’s complete disbelief started experimentally walking around the trailer, swinging his arm and bobbing his head. It looked ridiculous.

Jensen was in such a complete state of shock that he couldn’t even bring himself to laugh. “Okay Jared that’s enough, if you start walking like that people are going to start saying you’re an ape in disguise! Surely that’s worse than a few fangirls thinking you’re gay!” With me, he added silently, but decided to leave that issue alone. “Just calm down Sasquatch.” He tried for a reassuring smile.

Jared whipped around mid-step, and glared at him suspiciously. “Why do you call me that?”

“Jared for crying out loud, shut the hell up! And stop reading the damn fansites!”

Jared hung his head, and Jensen cursed himself for actually feeling bad. “Look man,” he said, reaching out to put a hand on the younger man’s shoulder but thinking better of it when he saw Jared’s eyes dart to his hand and his eyes widen slightly again, “This is crazy. You know how the fans are. In this business you just can’t let shit like this bother you man, there’s nothing you can do about it anyway. At least they all love you, that’s something isn’t it?”

After a moment, Jared nodded his head and sighed. “I guess so.” He finally looked up at Jensen, with big, apologetic eyes, and it was all Jensen could do to not cross the short distance and give his friend a hug. But that was most likely too much too soon, so he refrained. “I’m sorry man,” Jared said, and he seemed to have a similar thought to Jensen, and settled for patting Jensen awkwardly on the arm. “Just… forget this ever happened, yeah? Moment of insanity, stressful week, all of that?”

“You got it,” Jensen said, relieved that this bizarre moment was over.

----------

It wasn’t over.

Jensen and Jared didn’t mention the incident in the trailer for two whole, glorious days. But on the Sunday, they were lounging around playing X-Box with their feet up on the coffee table when Jared half-turned to Jensen, eyes darting quickly from the screen to Jensen’s face.

“Hey, Jense?” Jared asked, and Jensen frowned at his careful tone. “What if, you know… hypothetically one of us was… you know, gay?”

“YES!” Jensen exclaimed, his pumping the air as he K.O.’ed Jared’s character and the YOU WIN! sign flashed up on the screen. He turned to Jared, but his victory kind of lost its edge as Jared was still just staring at him, and Jensen realized that this was probably the only reason he’d finally managed to beat his friend at this game.

“Jensen?” Jared enquired.

“Oh, right,” Jensen said, sobering up quickly. “Uh…” he really didn’t know what to say to that, but Jared seemed to be expecting an answer. “Hypothetically, which of us would be gay?”

Jared rolled his eyes. “Does that really matter?” He asked.

“Well yeah,” Jensen flashed him a crooked smile. “If you were gay, then I’m sure nothing would be different, you’d sleep with guys instead of girls and maybe Sam’s reverence for Castiel would take on a whole new meaning. But if I was gay, well then we’d both be gay because no way would you be able to resist my charms.” Jensen smiled broadly at his own logic.

Jared gaped for a moment. Then he laughed. “Pfft, as if. If I was gay, there’s no way you’d be able to resist me.” He scooted a little closer to Jensen and wiggled his eyebrows suggestively.

Jensen laughed, and then Jared laughed, and soon they were both clutching their stomachs trying to breathe, but breaking out into a new round of hysterical laughter whenever they caught each other’s eye.

It didn’t occur to Jensen until much later when he was tossing and turning trying to fall asleep in his bed that both men had assumed that if they were gay, they would go for each other.

Hypothetically.

But still.

----------

“Do you think it helps the show?” Jared asked, leaning against the Impala next to Jensen the following day, as they were waiting for the sound technicians to prep the stage.

Jensen didn’t even have to ask, because honestly the issue had been at the back of his mind all day. “Probably,” he shrugged.

“How do you figure?”

“Well, we’ve never actually confirmed or denied either way, have we?” Jensen reasoned. “So all the stuck-up homophobes out there have no reason not to watch the show… but there’s enough suggested to leave the fangirls guessing. And I think the idea of us together makes the fans feel, I don’t know, protective of us?” Jensen had always marveled at the strong sense of personal pride his fans seemed to take in his work whenever he had a chance to talk to one of them for a few minutes. He knew that everyone endearingly referred to them as ‘the boys’, and he was sure that the idea of them together, whether as brothers or lovers, was very reassuring for the people who watched the show.

“Hm,” Jared said simply. “What do you think would happen if we did confirm it?”

“Dude, we’re not gay!” Jensen rolled his eyes.

“Hypothetically,” Jared shot back with a half-grin.

“I don’t know… the fangirls would probably throw a party. Bake a cake.” They’d probably defend us to the death from any negativity that came our way, he mentally added. Their fans were crazy, but he had to admire their loyalty.

“Hm,” Jared said again, and fell silent.

----------

Jensen was almost expecting Jared to bring up the subject again. Half wishing that he would, but Jensen wasn’t sure why. But Jared said and did nothing out of the ordinary for two whole weeks. He’d even gone back to touching Jensen semi-inappropriately, hugging him and putting an arm around his shoulder whenever he was in what Jensen liked to think of as his ‘happy place’. Jensen would never admit it out loud, but he’d missed Jared’s affectionate touches, and he happily reciprocated them every chance he could. Things seemed completely back to normal - until one Wednesday night.

They’d gotten the afternoon off because of some CW event that required their presence, and they were making their way down the carpeted street in front of the building to talk to reporters and smile at cameras - the usual spiel, in other words - when Jensen felt a hand interlace with his own. He jumped about a foot into the air and whipped his head around, and there was Jared, waving and smiling at everyone and acting like this was effing normal. When Jensen tried to pull his hand away Jared merely tightened his grip, and flashed Jensen an infuriatingly smug smile.

Jensen felt his face redden, and hoped his utter discomfort wouldn’t show on the pictures. Wait, what was he thinking, yes he did hope it would show up! What the hell would people think?

Questions were thrown out to them. Jared ignored the ones that weren’t about the show and stopped to answer those that were. Jensen just followed suit, completely bewildered. One thing was an arm around his shoulder, a hand on his chest, but this…

They made it inside the building and Jared made to let go of his hand, but Jensen saw his opportunity and used his grip on Jared’s hand to drag the taller man aside, down a deserted corridor and into some executive’s thankfully unlocked office. Jensen closed and locked the door before slamming Jared up against it, forcefully.

“What the hell was that, Jared?” Jensen growled, his face inches from Jared’s.

Jared’s face was smooth, innocent, and Jensen really wanted to punch him. “Well,” he drawled, slowly, carelessly, as though he hadn’t just… damn, Jensen didn’t even know what he’d really done. “You didn’t seem as bothered about this as I was. It was annoying. So I was just… experimenting.”

“Experimenting?!” Jensen spat out. “Jared, you can’t just kid around with shit like this!”

“Why not?” Jared rolled his eyes. “You said it yourself, it doesn’t matter what people think.”

“Well yeah, but…” Jensen was sure there was an argument here somewhere, some really obvious reason why Jared’s logic was flawed. But they were still standing so close, and Jensen suddenly felt his breath hitch when Jared’s eyes flickered, so briefly he thought he might have imagined it, down to Jensen’s lips.

“Besides,” Jared breathed. “I was curious.”

“About what?” Jensen responded, as breathlessly. But honestly, he realized that he didn’t really care about Jared’s answer. He’d seen that shift in Jared’s eyes and he knew it was reflected in his own.

Before he knew it, his lips were on Jared’s. He was pushing the taller man up against the door, and Jared actually moaned into his mouth. That was enough invitation for Jensen and he brought out his tongue to flick against Jared’s lips, which Jared parted easily and brought out his own tongue, licking against Jensen’s and entering Jensen’s mouth.

Kissing Jared was… Jensen couldn’t even find the words to explain what that was like. He vaguely wondered how they’d gone so long without ever doing this before.

After what felt like a really wonderful forever, they broke apart, both panting hard. Jensen leaned his forehead against Jared’s and untangled his hands from Jared’s hair - when had they got there? he wondered absently.

Jared smiled. “About whether you’d ever do that,” he said, and it took Jensen a moment to realize that Jared was answering his earlier question. And with a small wink at Jensen, Jared slipped his hand down to the doorknob, unlocked it, and slipped out of the small room, leaving Jensen gaping after him, open-mouthed.

When Jensen left the room ten minutes later, his plan was fully formed.

He quickly found Jared - the man was hard to miss, after all - talking to some star from 90210, and when Jared’s eyes met his, Jensen’s smile was devious, and Jared frowned slightly. Oh Jared, you don’t know who you’re messing with, Jensen thought savagely. He sidled up to Jared’s side and interlaced his hand with Jared’s. Jared stiffened next to him.

“Oh don’t mind me,” Jensen smiled sweetly at the girl in front of him. “Hi honey,” he purred to Jared, kissing him on the cheek and leaning his head on Jared’s shoulder. He’d show Jared experimenting. “Did you miss me?”

Jared squealed (he was doing that a lot lately) and disentangled himself from Jensen quickly, mumbling something about the bathroom and running off.

Jensen couldn’t help it. He laughed. At the girl’s raised eyebrow, Jensen just shrugged. “I’m winning,” he said, grinning at her.

“I’m sure you are,” the girl said wryly, and turned towards a group of her co-stars, shaking her head as she went.

----------

Jensen was just beginning to wonder where Jared had gone when he walked past a bathroom and felt a hand clamp around his wrist. Before he had time to react he was pulled inside and pushed up against the door, Jared’s face hovering menacingly above him.

“Here’s the thing Jensen,” Jared whispered dangerously, and Jensen shivered, though he didn’t feel afraid. Jared brought mouth down to Jensen’s ear and Jensen felt his eyes roll back into his head without even realizing what was happening. “As fine as we both clearly are with what people think-” Jared brought his tongue out to dart against the sensitive spot at Jensen’s ear, and Jensen groaned, pushing his body against Jared’s desperately. What the hell was Jared doing to him? “-I really don’t think you would appreciate me dry humping you in public.” Jared finished, bringing his mouth down to latch against Jensen’s throat.

“Jared…” Jensen forced out between groans, “What are we… oh god,” he breathed, arching himself against Jared and pushing his hips against Jared instinctually. Both men moaned, and Jared threw his head back, his eyes closed in ecstasy.

“Do that again,” Jared hissed, and Jensen did. They both groaned and Jensen was worried his legs wouldn’t hold him upright for much longer.

Jensen brought Jared’s head down and kissed him again, but he was surprised at this kiss - it was much slower than the first, less desperate but not any less passionate, as they took their time exploring each other’s mouths.

When they finally broke apart, they smiled at each other. “I think we need to go home,” Jensen whispered. “If you don’t want to do this in a bathroom with a hundred people on the other side of the door.”

“Yeah,” Jared grinned. “That sounds like a plan.”

----------

On that Thursday, Jared and Jensen arrived to work hand in hand, and no one even gave them a second glance. Jared turned to him victoriously. “I told you everyone already thought we were together,” he exclaimed.

Jensen rolled his eyes affectionately, leaning up to brush a light kiss across his lover’s lips. “And I told you it doesn't matter what people think.”
