Jensen was having a really bad week.

He wasn’t sure what was going on with him and Jared - things had always been so great between them, their friendship coming so easily and naturally, their obvious affection for each other both helping them survive their rigorous working days and the show’s publicity image. A win-win situation, so why did he have to go and mess it up?

The script had arrived the previous week and Jensen and Jared had spent the weekend going through it, rehearsing their scenes. There was a pretty intense fight scene between Sam and Dean in this episode and as usual their close association with their characters transcended into their off screen relationship - sometimes this was a blessing, but at moments like these it was only adding to the tension on set.

On Thursday, they had to film the scene in which Sam slams Dean up against a wall and sniffs his neck, almost biting his brother and drinking his blood. Jensen and Jared had been anxious about this scene, for one they were worried that Sam would even consider drinking Dean’s blood, and more importantly, think of the Wincest this would inspire! But their concern had not been welcomed by Kripke, he and the other producers were feeling pressure from the network to raise the stakes of the drama, and as Kripke said, “If we’re not allowed to give you guys new love interests, we have to satisfy the fans in… other ways.” Jensen was sure he hadn’t imagined the glimpse of pure evil in Kripke’s eyes as he had said it.

So here they were, and Jensen was being slammed against the wall for the seventh time. He grunted as he made contact with the wall, trying to transfer all his discomfort into his hurt and angry look at Sam, Jared scowling back at him.

“CUT!” the director yelled, and both Jensen and Jared let out noises of frustration. “Okay guys, come over here for a second.”

Jensen and Jared stalked over to the director without looking at each other, trying to maintain the tension in the scene.

“Alright,” the director said when they reached him. “Guys, I’m just not feeling the tension in this scene. I know, I know, you’re doing your best,” he held up his hands to stop whatever words were about to come from the two men. “But Jared, when you sniff him? Man, you look like a dog.”

Jensen threw a quick glance sideways at Jared, and flashed the director an alarming look. This was only a guest director so he didn’t know them as well, but surely he realized that Jared would not take kindly to being compared to a dog? Though Jensen wondered if the director was trying to rile Jared up… if so, he was a genius.

“So I’m thinking, maybe you should lick him.”

That got Jensen’s attention. “Wait, hold up, you want him to what now?”

The director rolled his eyes. “What are you, a girl? You are actors, I’m telling you to act!”

Jared suddenly spoke up, and Jensen flinched at the bite in his tone. “So… how exactly do you expect that me licking him will make me seem like less of a dog?”

If not for Jared’s tone, Jensen would have laughed.

“Why don’t you worry about acting, and I’ll worry about telling you what to do,” the director said smiling coldly at Jared. Jensen gaped, but was surprised when Jared made no retaliation, he simply stalked off to his mark without another word. Jensen shot the director the most angry Dean look he could muster and felt vindicated when the man flinched slightly, and then he hurried after Jared.

Jensen reached Jared and put a hand on his shoulder. “Look man, the director’s an ass, he-” he stopped abruptly when Jared shrugged off his hand.

“Whatever. Let’s just do the scene,” Jared said without looking at Jensen.

“Fine,” Jensen said angrily, turning swiftly and finding his own mark for the scene. What the hell? He couldn’t wait to get this scene over with and go home.

“On your marks,” the director called. “Ready? And… ACTION!”

Jensen felt himself slip back into Dean, for once a welcome vessel for his anger. “Sam, look,” he said in his deep voice. “We’ve done this before. We already know you can do this.”

Jared’s head was bent and in that moment he seemed so broken, so Sam, that Jensen was finding it had to watch. “I just… Dean, I’ve tried to stop, I have, I just want it so much. I need it.” He raised his eyes to meet Jensen’s, and Jensen actually had to look away now. The hurt and yearning in Jared’s eyes just seemed so real.

“We’ll get through this together Sammy,” Jensen whispered brokenly, forcing his eyes back to Jared’s.

Jensen watched as something switched in Jared’s eyes. Jared slowly rose from the bed, and Jensen could only watch, frozen in a mixture of Dean’s panic and his own.

“I can’t do it Dean,” Jared breathed.

“Yes, Sam, you can!” Jensen replied urgently, hurrying across the room and putting a calming hand on his ‘brother’s’ shoulder, trying to subtly prepare himself for the blow he knew was coming.

Still, the eight time he was pushed against that wall didn’t hurt any less than the previous seven, and Jensen forced his pain into a surprised huff as he once again locked eyes with a now practically livid Jared.

“I just… need…” Jared growled, and then Jensen felt it. The tip of Jared’s tongue brushed lightly against Jensen’s neck and he gasped in surprise, feeling his eyes flutter shut of their own accord. For the briefest moment he felt Jared tense beneath him, and then-

“CUT!”

Jared and Jensen jumped apart and Jensen couldn’t catch Jared’s eye.

“That was excellent boys!” The director called. “Of course we’ll need a separate shot of Dean’s reaction, that wasn’t entirely appropriate Jensen, but otherwise great scene everyone, let’s wrap it up for today!”

Jensen turned back to Jared to say something, but Jared was already stalking off the stage.

On Friday, Jensen had had enough.

The door to Jared’s trailer was closed, but Jensen knew that despite whatever was going on at the moment, Jensen could always enter if he wanted to. He knocked on the door courteously before letting himself in, and found Jared slumped on his couch, staring into space. He didn’t even look up when Jensen entered.

“Look man, what’s up with you?” Jensen said, foregoing small talk in favour of getting to the point. “You’ve been tense all week, and since when do we not talk?”

Jared looked up as if to speak, but seemed to think better of it and looked down again.

Jensen waited. When he realized that he was not going to get a reply, he went over to the couch and hit Jared on the side of the head.

“OW! What the hell, Jensen?” Jared said angrily, holding his head and finally looking up at Jensen angrily.

“So anger is the only emotion you’ll show towards me huh?” Jensen said, hating that he sounded so much like a girl.

Jared seemed to deflate instantly, slumping back into the couch and looking away. “Sorry man,” he mumbled, and Jensen was alarmed by the tone of his voice. That sounded more like Sam than Jared, and Jensen felt the anger seep out of him.

“What’s wrong man?” he asked quietly. “Did something happen? Did Genevieve-”

Okay, wrong thing to say. Jared was out of his seat so quickly that Jensen jumped back, alarmed.

“Oh sure, Jared has girl problems,” Jared spat, and advanced slightly on Jensen, who backed up a little more. “First Sandy, now Genevieve, Jared spends all his time thinking about girls! You know what Jensen? If that’s what you think-” Jared was up in Jensen’s personal space now, and if Jensen didn’t know him better he’d say he was going to punch him, “Then you might as well just go. Because this?” he gestured vaguely between them, “This isn’t working for me anymore, alright? Any of it.”

Jensen gaped. Then gaped some more. He couldn’t believe what Jared was saying. He didn’t want to be friends anymore? But Jensen didn’t do anything! The injustice of it all was enough to make Jensen’s eyes sting, but damn it if he was giving Jared the satisfaction. “You know what?” Jensen said icily, surprised at how even his voice sounded even though he was shaking inside. “If that’s how you feel, then fine. Who ever heard of co-stars being friends anyway right?” he said, with a small humorless laugh. He turned away from Jared and pulled open the door with as much force as he could muster. He just wanted to get away from Jared. Away from this fucking mess that he had no idea how had even started. Before he left, he turned to Jared, who looked at him with such intense anger that Jensen once again almost had to pull away. But he held Jared’s gaze evenly, the anger and hurt fighting for dominance inside him. Anger briefly overpowering him, Jensen whispered with as much malice as he could muster: “I wish I’d never met you.”

Right before slamming the door in Jared’s face, Jensen thought he saw hurt flicker across Jared’s stony face. Serves him right, Jensen thought vindictively, stalking across the set and avoiding everyone’s looks. He just needed to get to his own trailer. He just…

He made it into his trailer and slammed his door shut with all his might. Then he slammed his fist against it just for good measure, and felt a resounding crack! as his knuckled collided heavily with the wood. He fell across the door, cradling his hand in the other and slid to the floor, too overwhelmed to move.

Jensen’s brain didn’t seem to want to believe that he had just lost the best friend he had ever had.

He closed his eyes as the pain overwhelmed him, and felt a single tear slide down his cheek. He couldn’t move. He felt like he couldn’t breathe.

Everything went black.
