I blew off all my classes yesterday to go to the Aoi Matsuri (the hollyhock festival) one of the three largest in Kyoto. A procession of people in court garb from the Heian era walk from the old Imperial Palace to Kamigamo shrine in order to pray for prosperity.
On the way to Kamigamo, Mike and I rode past a small neighborhood procession going from business to business dancing and singing before circling back to their shrine. It was really neat. There were people carrying these large umbrellas with flowers on the top, and whenever they stopped, people would crowd under them. I think it was a good luck thing. Anyway, I was biking along and stopped to take pictures and one of the umbrella bearers came over and stopped to shade me underneath. I said "thank you" alot. ^_^
Lots of pics to go up on photobucket soon.
I went and took care of the guest ryokin at school today so that's squared away. Lukas is off playing army, as he calls it. Less than a week now until he arrives.
Also, today at school there was a performance of noh on a theater they built just today for that very purpose. I couldn't understand a word of what was going on, but it was very cool and there will be pictures and video posted soon.
My mommy got her mother's day gifts so I'm glad everything traveled well and she likes them. I love you mom and I think you're absolutely amazing and I don't say so nearly often enough.
