Chapter 4: No One Sleeps At Sleepovers

“Bang! Bang! Bang!”

A little boy ran towards me, shouting, his arms outstretched in front of him and his fingers forming a make-believe gun. His path formed a zigzag shape as he ducked and weaved behind invisible barriers and obstacles before finally reaching me. He shouted one last “Bang!” before he touched his gun to my stomach, delivering the “kill” shot.

I immediately doubled over, grasping my stomach as I faked a look of intense agony on my face. “Oh, no! I’m hit!” I moaned, drawing out each word dramatically. I crumpled, landing on my back as the little boy cheered triumphantly over his vanquished foe.

“Raiya!” exclaimed Yuto, a look of bewilderment on his face and a bowl of snacks in his hands. He went over to the little boy, setting the bowl on the nearby coffee table and patting him on the head. “What are you doing? Didn’t I tell you that killing my friends is bad?”

“But, aniki!” whined the little boy, pouting cutely.

“No, buts,” said Yuto sternly, waving his finger in disapproval.

As I watched the two brothers together, I could clearly see the family resemblance. With the six years age difference, Raiya looked like a miniature version of Yuto back in his J.J. Express days, complete with a similar haircut. The only noticeable difference was that Yuto’s eyes won over Raiya’s in the largeness department. But, even so, Yuto loved his brother dearly and had it firmly embedded in his head that Raiya was the most adorable thing in the world. Nothing could sway him from this belief. And I mean nothing.

“It’s alright, Yuto-kun,” I said, picking myself off of the floor. “It’s fun playing with Raiya-chan.” Upon hearing this, Raiya grinned happily back up at me.

“Oh, alright. As long as you’re both happy!” Yuto turned his attention back to his little brother. “Aniki and Daiki-niichan are going to watch a scary movie now, so if you don’t mind, would you please go play in your room?”

Raiya nodded once, his grin still on his face. “Okay, aniki!”

As he walked away, a slight bounce in his step, I addressed my friend who was looking after his brother’s departing form, “Hey, Yuto-kun. Thanks for having me over, even with all that’s happened.”

Yuto waved off my gratitude with a careless movement of his hand. “It’s alright, Dai-chan! We’ve had this scary movie marathon planned for ages! Besides, sleepovers with you are always a lot of fun!”

“Well, thanks anyways!”

I plopped myself down on Yuto’s couch as he popped in the first of the chain of scary movies that we were going to watch. As Yuto settled on the couch next to me and the music for the opening credits started playing, I couldn’t help but feel a sense of contentment. It’s not often that I got to just sit back and relax with a friend.

But it was not long afterwards that we both started to regret the choice of having a scary movie marathon. Whenever the villain of the movie appeared onscreen with his jagged knife and wrenched out someone guts, Yuto and I ended up clutching onto each other in fear. The PV director’s bloody murder had occurred too recently for us to be able to disassociate what was going on onscreen from what had happened. Every time we saw a victim getting brutally slaughtered by the villain, we were immediately reminded of the PV director, which definitely did not make the viewing pleasant at all.

After we were about halfway through our second movie, I finally couldn’t take it anymore. “Yuto-kun?” I asked timidly.

“Yeah, Dai-chan?”

“Is it okay if we stop watching? I’m getting seriously freaked out by all the killing in these movies,” I said, hoping that Yuto wouldn’t think that I was a wimp.

To my surprise, Yuto nodded rapidly. “Sure! I was thinking the same thing!”

Just as Yuto was going to get up to retrieve the DVD from the machine, Raiya popped out from behind the arm of the couch, shouting, “Die! Now!” He stabbed downward at me with something long and blade-like, and Yuto cried out in horror.

I felt something poke me roughly in the chest, and as I looked down, I saw the end of a yellow plastic ruler prodding me. Raiya was perched on the couch on top of me, his small body pinning me down. “I’ve got you, Daiki-niichan!”

Yuto’s eyes widened. “Wait, Raiya! Stay like that!”

“S-stay like that?” I burst out in disbelief. “Really, Yuto-kun?”

“Yes!” my friend exclaimed, a look of excitement lighting up his face. “Wait, I need to check something!”

“Check something?”

I saw Yuto pull out his cellphone, quickly dialing someone’s number. He waited while the call went through, and when it did, he immediately said, his tone rushed, “Hey, Yama-chan? Can I ask you something?” He paused as he waited for what was apparently Ryosuke’s response. “Can you check if the director’s stab wound is longer horizontally or vertically? Thanks!”

I looked down at the ruler’s point once more in puzzlement. Raiya had been holding it like a knife, stabbing up at me underhanded. The “blade” of the ruler was vertical against my chest.

“Thanks, Yama-chan! Thank you so much!” Yuto ended the call and said, “Dai-chan! I’ve just figured out an important clue!”

“What clue?” I asked, even though I already had a faint idea of what it might be.

“I don’t think the director was ‘naturally’ stabbed!” he answered excitedly.

“Naturally stabbed?”

“Yeah, or at least not stabbed under normal circumstances,” he amended. “You see, if you were to purposely stab someone, like Raiya is right now, the wound would be more vertical than horizontal, right? Due to the way the person is holding the weapon, right?”

“Right.”

“That’s what I thought, especially since we know that wire cutters, which are usually held vertically, were used to kill the director. But from what I could remember, the director’s stab wound looked more horizontal than vertical. So, I called Yama-chan to check, since he has the pictures saved on his phone. And I was right! The director’s wound is actually more horizontal! He even told me that from what he could see from the pictures, the wound was angled downwards as if the point of the wire cutters had cut down into his body!” explained Yuto.

I furrowed my brow in thought. “But what does all that mean, then, Yuto-kun?”

Yuto’s facial expression fell. “I’m not really sure. But, Yama-chan said that we could discuss it more at length tomorrow when we get to the studio.”

I nodded. “Yeah, now’s probably not the time to think too much about it. We’re supposed to be enjoying ourselves, Yuto-kun,” I said gently.

“Yeah, I guess so.”

“So…Is it okay if Raiya gets off of me now?” I asked, gesturing at the small boy still on top of me.

“What?” Yuto blinked. “Oh, oh, yes! Raiya, you can get off Daiki-niichan now!” As Raiya clambered off of me, taking his ruler with him, Yuto helped me back up with an apologetic expression on his face. “I’m so sorry, Dai-chan!”

“It’s okay. Just, next time, tell me beforehand if you’re going to have your brother sit on me. I like to be warned of these things ahead of time.”

A short, but important chapter...^^;; I loved writing in Raiya (even though I have no idea if he would act the way he does...)!
