Because I already know how I want to close this thing out, and because tomorrow is looking like a very busy and long day, and because (as my hubby said) I've done these late, so why not early?
I'd like to thing that if I had a favorite song, then it would tend to remain my favorite for more than a year. That makes this particular prompt a little silly. Instead, how about the song(s) that I was talking about most at this time last year?
It was around this time last year that my husband noticed that I always turned the radio down when Kelly Clarkson's song "
My Life Would Suck Without You" played. Music video linked for the masochistic among you. This song is about an on-again, off-again relationship where the woman keeps taking him back, despite the toxic nature of the relationship, primarily because she has invested all of her self-esteem into him. It's sick. And it is even more sick that this song reached #1 so quickly that it set a billboard record. Yes, yes, musically it is quite nice, but the lyrics are disgusting.
Compare that to a song that Katy Perry released as a single just a couple of months prior. It's a very similar song, also about an on-again, off-again relationship. [A bit tangential, but interestingly enough the album art for the singles are even similar:
Katy's here,
Kelly's here. But then, I've never heard Kelly Clarkson accused of originality, other than being the original American Idol.]
I very much enjoy Katy Perry's
Hot n Cold because it portrays a nearly opposite attitude. It says, yes, we're no good for each other, but when it's hot, it's hot, and it's fun like a rollercoaster. None of Kelly Clarkson's terrible "You're the best I can do. Please love me!" attitude.
And now, for something completely different, the epic conclusion to my 30 days of music.
