I'm not a fan of the Saturday night pastor's style (he's a bit all over the place for me) but I TOTALLY agree about turning the lights off. It makes every meeting seem like a church retreat. For me there's always a certain spirit at retreats that makes it feel like everyone is really serious about getting in God's presence. No fooling around.

This is where my husband and I have issues in finding a church we like.

When I was a teenager, we started going to church again and since then I've 'grown-up' in a Pentecostal-type atmosphere. For 20-40 minutes (depending on the church), there is worship which means singing to God. Now, some had lights off some on... I never noticed a difference.

Sam grew up going to Lutheran churches (even was confirmed at Martin Luther's church in Germany, cool, yes?). There is alot of stand-up, sit down, breaks for readings, and a very short sermon. I find this so distracting for truly conversing with God or focusing b/c I'm worried about what position to be in next. The day they tell me to downward dog, I'm walking out!

What works best for me is a chunk of time devoted to Worship and a chunk of time devoted to the Word. This usually makes Sam uncomfortable.

Wish I lived by you so I could go to Saturday night service with you and Sunday service elsewhere with him. Then I could have the best of both worlds.

I really enjoyed this post. You write about this topic very well. There are many cherished moments in life, why not wear a beautiful dress! When looking back on special memories of your child wearing a gorgeous dress, it will make a fond memory.
