Unintentionals

I unintentionally (we'll find out if it turns out to be accidentally) told my middle school students I keep a blog. I'm fairly aware that what I write on LJ is open to the world to read. But I mostly have a specific audience in mind. I'm not sure whether it should bother me that my middle school students may start reading this stuff. Of course, the ( Read more... )

Dear Jessica,

To wit: a short letter drafted in the manner of one who has been watching too much Gilmore Girls and reading The Picture of Dorian Gray.

Just the other day I found myself describing a situation as "nervous-making," which naturally led me to think of you, which naturally led me to think "why on earth haven't I talked to her in 2 months?" Henceforth followed a brilliant display of cyber-awkwardness as I re-familiarized myself with Livejournal solely to make a new account with which I could comment on your blog.

I am sorry to hear of the blackdeathcruddery that has been circling about of late. I have now caught up on all your recent (albeit scarce) posts and still feel insufficiently informed about your comings and goings. So, do tell! From whence are you coming? To whence are you going?

I know you have always resented me for not appreciating your jokes about obscure classical deities, but since I have been on hiatus from the cybersphere (what with living on the other side of the planet and whatnot) could you find it in your heart to forgive me? I mean, what better way to get the grump out of your life than by inviting a different grump back in to take its place? Enter yours truly.

Sincerely,
Gretchen Smith

Dearest Younger Miss Smith,

By leaving your email in the comment on my blog mean you that you will not likewise be blogging whereat I might comment upon your comings and goings? I must say that while I was never offended at your lack of obscure-deity-humor, I might be inclined to take offense at the one-sided nature of the bargain which you propose. I shall assume that the lack of blog on your part is, however, an oversight, soon to be corrected, and therefore shall not take offense without giving further notice.

I shall endeavor to send an email in your direction and to post more frequently forthwith. At present, however, I need to send emails to two professors, both of whom will be wanting assignments that I will not, in the time allowed, be able to complete in satisfactory manners; most particularly, I will not be able to finish these onerous and brilliant assignments at all if I continue to write, to wit, in the manner of one who has been reading Robinson Crusoe and responding to one who has been reading The Picture of Dorian Grey at such length as I am now engaged in doing.

I have missed you on a great many occasions, not the least of which times having included the numerous instances of reading more-interesting-than-Thomas-Jefferson authors in my early American Literatures class with Dr. Moore.

Yours in truest sisterly affection,
Jessica De Milo

Dear Jessica,
I should have known that I would get sick of this tomfoolery sooner rather than later, and that you would be better at it than me. Henceforward I will write as myself, and only myself. To hell with Oscar Wilde!

Regarding your question: yes, I intend to blog here at some point. Don't hold your breath - it will probably be a long time coming. Mostly I just made an account so I could comment on yours. Anyway, until yesterday I didn't even know that Livejournal was available to people in China - a lot of blog servers are blocked, as well as Facebook and twitter. I will try to throw something together quickly to appease the rioting masses. :)
