Our school is very specific that students are not allowed to have candy or gum except by the express permission of the teachers. Right, wrong, or ugly, because I was homeschooled after the 4th grade, there are a lot of things that just don't bug me the way they seem to bug the other teachers. I've heard back positive things from many teachers about what their students say about me. I've also heard back, however, that students who were apparently not supposed to sit together at the request of their parents neglected to tell me and then bragged about my allowing them to sit together; and then my middle school students are strictly disallowed gum by their other teacher, and he told me the other day that he made a student spit out a piece of gum three minutes before they switched to my classroom, and that the student promptly put a new piece of gum in her mouth as soon as she left her classroom because I let them get away with it. All of which made me feel a little naive, particularly because I'd never noticed any of the students in my classes chewing gum. Oops.

Don't feel bad... I would make a horrible teacher b/c I'd either be a total Nazi they all hated or too easy on them and all the other teachers would hate me. :) Either way, I'd be terrible. So you're awesome just cause you can! And you're still getting respect from both pools.
