Pop-Culture in a Latin Class

Sep 16, 2009 16:30

First, a little Latin vocabulary:

Magistra: Teacher (female, aka, me)
Discipulus: Student (male, aka, smart alec)
Discipula: Student (female, aka, object of smart alec's wisecracking)
And now, a dialog (which actually happened in my class today):

MAGISTRA: [having called DISCIPULA by the wrong name] I mean, Jordan--

DISCIPULUS: [laughing] Robert

MAGISTRA: Ha. Ha.

DISCIPULUS: Robert. Jordan.

MAGISTRA: Robert Jordan. Ha.

DISCIPULUS: Do  you get it?

MAGISTRA: Robert Jordan? Yes I get it.

DISCIPULUS: Do you know who that is? Really?

MAGISTRA: Robert Jordan. Wheel of Time. Yes, I get it.

DISCIPULUS: Wow. You know Robert Jordan too? [referring to the fact that MAGISTRA has also read the Twilight series] You're like, the coolest teacher ever.
Of course, I'd like to be known as 'cool' for things other than my knowledge of big names in fantasy. But still. It was a good moment regardless.

teaching, fantasy
