My Contribution to the Struggling Publishing Industry

May 30, 2009 02:37

I bought books tonight. Bunches of them.

The half of the required texts for my Literature and the Environment class (coming in July) which were cheaper at Amazon or B&N.com than my campus bookstore's used prices:
  • Sand County Almanac & Sketches ~ Leopold
  • Pilgrim At Tinker Creek ~ Dillard
  • Stars, The Snow, The Fire ~ Haines
  • Wilderness And Razor Wire ~ Lamberton
Research for the Geohexae project:
  • Castle ~ David Macaulay
  • Cathedral ~ David Macaulay
  • In Search of the Old Ones ~ David Roberts
  • The Ancient Cliff Dwellers of Mesa Verde ~ Caroline Arnold
Stuff for my mom, ssshhhhh! (which she'll get for Father's Day since I was flat broke on and about Mother's Day):
  • Somewhere in Time ~ Richard Matheson
  • Somewhere in Time: Original Motion Picture Sound Track
So, obviously the last one on the mom list isn't a book, but it goes with the book. The Jane Seymour/Christopher Reeve film is one of my mom's all time favorites. In developing a Pandora station based in string music to listen to while reading copious amounts of 19th century literature, it occurred to me that one of my favorite string melodies was the Rhapsody on a theme of Paganini's from that film. But when I had to look it up to get the title right I realized mom doesn't have the sound track for the movie, and then Amazon (ever helpful) suggested that there was a book! Mom handed down her voracious love of reading to me, but I've yet to come close to the speed with which that woman can devour a book. I expect she'll love this one and then lend it to me later.

music, movies, family, books
