Housing Quandry: Instalment 1

Tuesday's Metrics: 231 words, because my writing time was interrupted by a conversation about Thomas Hardy and Ernest Hemmingway with a coworker. So, while they're scanty words, the ones I didn't write were for a good cause.

I talked to two people about housing/roommate situations yesterday evening. One of which will involve five other roommates; not super exciting.

The other is at an amazing house, where I would have most of a walk-out basement to myself, a really cool roommate, all utilities and high-speed internet included in cheap rent … and it's EIGHT miles from campus across town. As much as gas costs right now, it would be expensive to have to drive that far. But more important to me, if I were bussing I would spend about 1:50 traveling per day, and if I were driving (which I would need to do at least two, and probably three, days per week because there's stuff I have to do in the evenings and the last bus that would get me to this place leaves at 4:50 in the afternoon) I'd still be driving 1:10 per day.

In an hour and ten minutes I could: read 75 pages; memorize a week's worth of Greek or Latin vocabulary; write 350 words of fiction; cook, eat, and clean up from a balanced, sit-down meal; shower, shave my legs, give myself a manicure and a pedicure; write a blog and read and comment on three others.

Is cheap rent and personal space worth giving up that much time - or more - five days per week?

home, writing
