The Validictorian is the person chosen to deliver the farewell address for the class during graduation. It's a great honor. Ususally it's someone who represents all the positive qualities of the graduating class (smart, funny, athletic, popular, etc...)

Underclassmen are usually Freshmen (9th grade, 14-15yr old) and Sophpomores (10th grade, 15-16 yr old) those are the first two years of high school. The 3rd and 4th years are Upperclassmen: Juniors (11th grade, 16-17 yrs old) and Seniors (12th grade, 17-18 yrs old)

ack. I should have spell checked that. Sorry. Validictorian Valedictorian / Ususally Usually / Sophpomores Sophomores -

I should add that these are titles, and there aren't any special jobs or responsibilities attached to them, apart from the farewell speech given by the Valedictorian.

Thanks! I've always wanted to know what they meant - I thought for a while that sophomores were musical people in american high schools *blushes*.

typically, the valedictorian is the student with the highest cumulative grade point average (GPA) in the class. the salutatorian is the #2 person, academically speaking.

Yet another thing that we don't do here in the UK - Grade Point Averages...sometimes I work it out personally to see how well I'm doing, and teachers tell your parents when they see them what grade your averaging, but it isn't made public.
