Pity Oscar or Pitty Oscar

So, Brad Pitt has been nominated for best actor in The Curious Case of Benjamin Button. Now, this film was phenominal as far as really sad fucking movies go. it's such a simple concept that presents so many interesting ideas and situations: a man that ages in reverse and his interactions with the world around him. A man who, in his formative years, was confined to an old folk's home, and in his middle years is blessed with youth and vitality while the people around him age and die.

This presents to the actor an interesting challenge: how to act old, yet immature. Even in his teens and twenties he appears older than 45. One needs to present physical age while maintaining naivete. Even when he reaches his "actual" age, Pitt needs to act wise beyond his actual years, while still considering his upbringing as a feeble old man in the 1940s.

For this reason, Brad Pitt is deserving of an Oscar. There's no doubt to me that he deserves the nomination, however, the Oscar might belong to someone else.

Mickey Rourke is a great actor. He's my dad's favorite as well. Now I haven't seen every single movie of his, but I have seen the good ones. He was in one of the best films ever made: Harley Davidson and the Marlboro Man. Now I'm sure our generation hasn't heard of it, but I'm sure we've all heard of Frank Miller's Sin City. In the Robert Rodriguez film, Rourke played Marv, the large fellow with all the bandaids. Great actor.

He's in an upcoming film entitled "The Wrestler". They say it's going to end up being his Oscar performance. Mickey's been denied the Oscar for about 30 years, so if he does get it for this movie, it'll be well deserved. Unfortunately for Mickey, Brad Pitt turned out that unforgettable performance as Benjamin Button. The buzz is this: Pitt gave an Oscar winning performance, but this might be Rourke's last chance for an Oscar. The academy is saying that if he wins it, it would be a "pity" Oscar, because it's now or never for Mickey.

Obviously, I haven't seen the Wrestler yet, but I know he's a great actor. I've seen frames from the movie and he's in great shape for an older dude, rocking the 80s metalmane. It takes a lot for a man his age to play a pro wrestler, but we can't discount Pitt's performance. It's a dilemma for Hollywood, and even me. I actually don't know who really deserves it.

Pity Oscar, or Pitty Oscar?
