Eh, it was kidsy at best.
I mean sure, Spridle gets to flip off a dude, but it was still very much a PG movie. Good for a cheap thrill, and certainly entertaining to old Speed Racer fans, but it didn't totally do it for me. What appealed to me was the characters featured. I was a fan of Racer X mostly, his whole dark persona was very appealing, and he was the guy you knew could kick anyone's ass to boot. My other favorite was Chim Chim, because he's so darn adorable. Really, nothing beats a trained chimp.
Otherwise, I was viewing a lot of bright colors and flashy effects that cheapened the cinematic experience. It's like Nascar on an acid trip. I wish I had more to say about it, especially considering I was looking forward to it so much. It wasn't wholly terrible, but I guess I have to say it was kinda disappointing. Not Dragon Wars grade disappointment, but still a slight let down. I dunno, maybe it was the ridiculously misbehaved children running around the theater throughout the movie. In all my moviegoing years, I've never been privvy to such an unmanaged gaggle of children in a theater before.
Don't let me discourage you though, go check it out and make your own call. Go, Speed Racer, Go!
