Death Note
At the risk of jumping on that overloaded bandwagon, this might just be the most amazing anime I've ever experienced.
Not gunna go into everything because honestly, I'll get lost in it. I will go on about Light Yagami a bit though. He's the most amazing character I've ever seen in action. He's a bad guy, kind of, but what he's doing is a form of justice. The only reason he's pegged as the bad guy is because his opposition are the authorities. Actually, come to think of it, both sides are Justice. Throughout the series though, Light becomes a legitimate good guy for awhile. Gah it's hard not to spoil some of it, but he basically joins his rival to chase after... himself, basically. It's cool because I've never really seen any series do that with their protagonist.
Basically, if you like dark evil antihero type protags, Light's your guy. If you enjoy the more pure hearted, nice guy type protags...Then Light's still the man! Well, between episodes 16 and 24 at any rate.
So extremely long and complicated story short, I thought I should check out Death Note and I wasn't disappointed, not at all.
