What's new?

I am so tired! I can't wait to go to bed tonight.

Last Friday, I went to Chicago. My friend was moving there, but she flew in with the (now 8 week old!) baby, while her husband drove, so the girls met her there. (These are the women I go to Vegas with, basically college friends.) It was great! Although I didn't see anything touristy, and didn't get a ton of sleep. On weekends, I usually wake up early-ish to pee, but go back to bed. In Chicago, I just got up, because I knew friends were up already (the one with the baby and the bad sleeper). I got to live House Hunters (HGTV) when we spent Sunday looking at apartments and houses for her to buy, which was really fun. Also, tiny baby is the way to go -- we just carted him around with no problem. And holy cow, my friends are in better shape, compared to where they were in May. I thought one would be headed for divorce, but she's not, and another one has found a great therapist who is no-bullshit enough for her to actually listen to. So that was great. And I finally got some Rick Bayless food in the airport on the way home.

Got home Tuesday afternoon.

Wednesday afternoon, went to Portland (OR!) for work. Had two meetings which went fine, hung out with a coworker who was OK, and flew back on the redeye last night. I still think it was the right choice, since the other decent option was 7am or some shit, and that would also have meant minimal sleep, PLUS being on the plane all day. Meh. Zzzzzzzzz. Also had some incredible duck-fat french fries. Mmmmm.

Also some books. Slightly out of order, some re-reads in a time of stress:

45. In the Teeth of the Evidence, Dorothy L. Sayers. Short stories, and kind of bullshit, since it says "Featuring Lord Peter Wimsey" on the front, and he's only in a couple of the stories.

46. The Rubber Band, Rex Stout. From 1936, solid like they always are. I love Archie.

47. Three Witnesses, Rex Stout. From 1956, and ditto. This one is three stories, like a bunch of the Wolfe books. Enjoyable! (There will be more Stout to come in a future installment. He is totally my comfort reading.)

48. A Visit from the Good Squad, Jennifer Egan. So great! I read it for a book club meeting I didn't actually go to, but was so glad I did! I thought it would be harder or weirder or darker or something, given the acclaim (this is like when I thought "Pet Sounds" must be some weird Beach Boys I didn't know, because things that are Great aren't supposed to be fun and easy?). Anyway, it's basically interconnected stories about people finding their places in the world and in time. Good stuff.
