I'm always a little behind on Fresh Air, so if you listen regularly, this will be old news to you...
I'm listening to the show with
Alice Waters and of course I want to punch her in the face, which is partly her voice and manner, and not what she's saying. But part of it is what she's saying about they way people should eat and deal with food.
I learned on the
following day's show (which I listened to last week), that before the A&P came in and transformed food shopping, the average household spent one-third of their income on food. That is bananas. (Not what they were spending on bananas.) That is just not sustainable with the way our society is current organized economically. But maybe it is what it costs to eat local or small batch or whatever food. Not that that's what people were necessarily getting in pre-supermarket days.
In short, I don't know. Of course it's nice to eat good food, but when everyone can't afford it, I think it is valuable to have at least decent options for everyone, and maybe that's flown-in oranges at the Wal-Mart.
One thing I do know is that I'm not eating local all winter, because I live in New England, and I'm not canning my own tomatoes now to carry me through, nor do I have a root cellar.
