Thursday night, had book club. Book club! (See below.) I'm kind of on the fence about staying in it, because it's sort of too many people and I'm the worst at serious literary discussions, but I'm happy to have the prompt to read better stuff, and I guess who cares if I don't have any analysis? We'll see.
This morning, went out for dim sum with my friend from work and her boyfriend. It was fun! She's Chinese, so it was also kind of fun watching her order stuff. Walked there and back in the wrong shoes, so I guess I'll be in my Sensible Sandals tonight. Then I made it to the post office to return some stuff to Lands End, and the library, where I didn't buy anything at the sale, which is just as well.
AND tonight I'm going to see Crazy Stupid Love with some of the book club folks (my new internet friends), so that will be fun. I'm trying to negotiate becoming closer to a few of the people that I like the best, because so far we're mostly getting together in big groups, which is fine, but you know. Some people are annoying.
And a couple of books read:
34. Tongues of Serpents, Naomi Novik. I love the conceit of the series -- Napoleonic wars plus dragons, but this book was just all right. It takes place in Australia, but she apparently killed off (or just ignores) most of the aboriginal people, which seemed a little weird and too bad, given the cool stuff she's done with different cultures in previous books. In short: eh. I'll read the rest of them, of course. It sounds like they'll be in North America and/or Brazil soon, so that could be fun.
35. Lolita, Vladimir Nabokov. BLEH. (See what I mean about lack of analysis?) I hated spending so much time in the head of this creepy perv, and I definitely value plot over language in my reading, so this was not a winner for me. There weren't even any other characters, really! Everyone else was just projections of creepy Humbert Humbert. People in the group were suggesting (from other sources) that the book was his "love letter" to the US and/or the English language, but don't do me any favors on that account.
