Went down to John Lennon's Memorial last night with Laura. Considering the freezing weather conditions the turnout was amazing. I took the opportunity to wear long underwear for the first time. There were enough people that they had pretty significant crowd control and a huge police presence (probably because a good portion of these people are peace protesters by day). It was a little hard to take photos at night, both with all the bright lights (again for crowd control) and candles (my cameras enemy), but
here's what I managed to get.
Overall though, an absolutely amazing event to commemorate the loss of a voice of an era. You really get an idea of the footprint that Lennon had by listening to the hundreds upon hundreds of people singing harmoniously along (everyone knew the words) to a half dozen or so fans strumming their guitars amongst candles, flowers, tears, memories, old photos and changed lives. A moment of silence was observed at 10:50pm, the time John Lennon was shot by a 'fan' outside of the Dakota apartment complex (visible and throwing distance from Strawberry Fields), and another moment of silence at 11:15pm, the time that John was presumed to have died on the way to the hospital.
After the vigil, Laura took me over to Panchito's Mexican Restaurant over around West 4th and we had a great meal there, including the "Top 6 Best Margarita in Manhattan" (not sure what that's saying), but it was good and the food was fabulous.
We got our second round of snow last night in the wee hours of the morning, and it hit us pretty good. Much more snow than the
first snow and huge flakes, but unfortunately, it poured rain in the late morning and turned most of it into a yucky slush, almost immediately.
Today is Ally's birthday so I might be headed back down to Spring Street later this evening for some birthday celebratory events.
