bliss

is the icelandic word for goodbye, one of the only words in that language I was able to wrap my tongue around. isn't it beautiful? the country is, as well, more so than I could have imagined.

see?

so, for the sake of brevity, my favorite/least favorite things about iceland/reykjavik, bulleted:

favorites
skyr, the local yogurt
best-tasting tapwater EVER
free lockers, everywhere. none of this four euro business.
no-fee atms
"hot pots", or hot tubs, all over the city.

least favorites
children randomly setting off firecrackers anywhere, anytime. never did find out what that was all about.
umm... it's cold.

our brief stay in iceland (1.8-1.12) went as follows:

Day 1: slept. went out for Daim & paprika pringles. slept. (in our defense, we were both sick.)

Days 2 & 3: roamed Reykjavik, local museums, restaurants, & swimming pools (the local pastime).

Day 4: hired a car, drove down to the southernmost coast of the country to see the black sand beaches & the rock formations. this part of the country is more breathtaking & more desolate that I could possibly describe in words. drove back up the coast, headed for the Blue Lagoon. the weather on the coast, notoriously changeable, turned from brisk and sunny to dark and stormy with heavy snows and fierce winds. needless to say, never made it to the lagoon (or back to our hostel). the rental car? buried under several feet of snow on an isolated road. luckily, we did make it out of the country & onto our flight the next morning, thanks to our new best friends Eythor & Svavar & our mom-away-from-home in iceland. more on this later.

this concludes your weekly update.
