I know some of my friends who read this know how to Knit/Crochet. I'm thinking about starting to Knit/Crochet also. I want to make crappy scarves and stuff for friends as presents.

Does anyone know of a good "getting started" guide? Also, which is better? D: Which is easier? +/-'s?

<3 for any halp.

Oh! Oh! Oh!

(I am such a dork, I literally shouted, "She wants to crochet and knit!" just now to no one in particular)

I second knittinghelp.com for knitting. That's how I learned. I would also say try both English and Continental. A lot of people find English easier but I can't do it, and continental is faster. For crochet just look it up on YouTube and you should find stuff. The problem with crochet is it's hard to find the good patterns, not just dowdy circa 1975 patterns. But it can go wicked fast and you can make some really amazing things with it.

Also, sign up for the waiting list for Ravelry.com. Such a good resource. And fun!

Also also, if you can find a local group that doesn't drive you up the wall they can be a wealth of knowledge.

Also also also, don't start with cotton! Wool is more expensive than acrylic, but acrylic often feels horrible when you work with it. Avoid novelty yarn (the stuff with fluff balls or fur and such) and chenille. Alpaca is expensive but amazingly soft and drapey and warm. Merino wool is also nice. For super cheap but still soft there's Caron Simply Soft (sold in generic craft stores out here), which is the nicest acrylic I've found--plus about $3 a skein.
