I would have thought the Americanisation of Stephen would be Stefan.
Isn't Steven another name entirely? (If with almost certainly the same root)

Stefan is rather continental European, I'd have said.

To be fair, the form Steven almost certainly originated in England, and is really just a further Anglicisation of the name Stephen which is itself an Anglicisation of the Greek Stephanos (or, rather, Στεφανος).

However, the real point is that a man of Stephen Fry's dignity would naturally have the more classical spelling of Stephen.
