Hibernation is over!

Apparantly summer was my vegetation state. I watched so much television to the point that I'm disgusted with the fact it exists. I kept to myself, and I liked it that way. However, school starts again in a week, and I'm talking to people other than my roommate, boyfriend, and uncle (whom I lived with over the summer), and that's okay, too.

I had an interesting job over the summer. An agency, the San Andreas Regional Center, that provides services to developmentally delayed clients (re: individuals with mental retardation, autism, or cerebral palsay) is conducting a survey to those clients to see how they can provide better services. So, I've been driving all over San Jose/Santa Clara/Campbell to meet with these clients and conduct a standardized interview/survey. I've seen the spectrum of nonverbal/low-functioning clients (I talk with a care provider in those instances) to those who are married and live independently. It's been one of those fascinating/rewarding/depressing/mind-opening experiences that are always good to pick up here and there, especially considering this is a population I'm interested in working with (old people still kick ass!).

I start my second year internship at the VA (Veteran's Affairs) long-term care facility in September. I had to donate a sample of urine for drug testing, which I am slightly worried about... but I think the passage of time and my athletic metabolism will help. Though I'd be lying if I said my fingers weren't figuratively crossed.

Living with my uncle over the summer was cool. He's a bartender (I posted an entry a looong time ago about a time he was attacked at work) and I have visted his bar once or thrice for free drinks. If a weird guy ever starts to hit on me or my friend (like last night), he just drops in a casual, "yeah, that's my NIECE," and all is well. Having a bartender uncle is great!

Moved into my new apartment over the weekend. Living with my roommate from last year, but we get our own room, which is excellent. I really like the look of our place. Nothing crazy-fancy, but it already feels like home.

I wish I could be mentioning my marathon training, but i have to put that on hold, at least for a couple of weeks. I took a bad fall a few weeks ago, and my left leg is all fucked up. I tried to keep training after the fall and that was a BADSTUPIDNOTAGOODIDEADUMMY mistake. ahem. I feel better after not running for a few days, so hopefully I can still run the marathon in October. I can also just put it off for a few months, won't be the end of the world.

Still with John, been dating him about 7 mo. now. Things are going well, and it's almost kinda scary. Like, scary in a good way. We'll see what happens!

I think that's all for now. Just felt like some sort of update was in order. Now that I'll be on campus more, and hopefully get DSL at the apartment, I can check up on this more often. I know it's not as personal as email/calling/viewing-in-person, but I liked the feeling of a small community established with friends and casual readers. I'm hoping other people feel the same way and that this will pick up once again in the fall. !Viva la livejournal revolucion! [There you go Amy, I'm trying!]
