Ode to Joy
There are many simple joys in my life that I look forward to that come about each year. Winter, being one that I have already spoken about; DCI Championships in San Antonio; and hot cast iron baked biscuits!!
Yes, boys and girls, it’s Sights and Sounds time in good ol’ San Marcos. A time when all the trees are filled with little lights, vendors at every step of the way, music, singing, dancing, and warm buttermilk baked biscuits!
As you can see from the photo, they have a long line of cast iron ovens and they put searing hot charcoal on the top. This bakes the goodies inside. I remember seeing a cooking show on PBS that does nothing but this type of cooking. Kinda like the “olden days of the west” kinda thing. And when they hand you a couple of these biscuits and put a dollop of butter on top, ooooh, the joy!
Tonight, I will be munching on these things. We always try to make it to the event. And it never fails that the temperature drops the night I go. It’s inevitable. I’ll take my camera and take plenty of photos. So here is to simple joys!
